Hi everyone,

The Smart Growth Cinema Series, an informal bi-weekly film screening
hosted by our respective committees, continues this Thursday, Oct. 6,
with a two-part documentary film entitled, "The New Metropolis."

This pair of films explores the crisis spreading through America’s
older suburbs, once the birthplace of the American Dream. Built mostly
in the post-war housing boom, these “first ring” suburban towns have
gone from boom to bust, as development pushes farther out and leaves
homes and businesses abandoned and afflicted by blight, growing
poverty, white flight, and crumbling infrastructure. In two half-hour
episodes, this groundbreaking PBS documentary examines the forces at
work and effective community solutions.

The New Metropolis has sparked civic engagement dialogue across the
country and been used to deepen the conversation about Pittsburgh's
future.

The film will start at 8:30pm in Student Lounge A111 (located across
from the HBH Cafe). Free popcorn will be provided. All are welcome
to attend.

Please note: I regret that we were unable to gather everyone's input
in anticipation of this screening due to time constraints. Our
committee will host the series again on Thursday, Dec. 1, so start
brainstorming now!

Special thanks to Rachel Canning for agreeing to lend us her personal
copy of the film.

Best,
Simone
