Hi,

Just to let know syntevo that I've used Smartgit for years and always considered it as the best git graphical client out there. Although I do well understand the change of syntevo's politic about non commercial license, I'm far from being an opensource contributor of an hundred commits per year. The lifetime license is way too expensive for me, if it was at max 80$  then I may have considered it but 278$ is too much. Well, the one year update license is 89$, but paying 89$ per year for a git graphical client is neither an option for me.

I'm a bit sad to move to https://git-fork.com/ which clearly doesn't have so much features.

I'll miss you Smartgit! You've been such an helpful friend for all those years and your developers did such a good work.

Hello Seb D,

yes, for me it is the same: for small open source projects (which I support just some weeks per year) and also for small non-commercial but private projects I could also invest about 80$ for a lifetime license.

By the way, such licenses would have an advantage for SmartGit, too :-): because we use it and are happy with it, so we would carry it into our companies and projects: whenever the Git client is up for discussion, we would be ambassadors for SmartGit :-)

Thanks a lot for your reference to git-fork.com, that helps a lot :-)

Kind regards,
Thomas

Hello,

We are sorry to hear that you are affected by our recent licensing changes. For more details and reasons, please have a look at:

<https://www.syntevo.com/blog/?p=5363>

Note, that in the last month we have extended our conditions to allow hobby usage for employees of companies with a valid SmartGit license.

Also, we strongly commit to open-source: is there any (additional) open-source(-like) activity that you can show, so we can categorize you as "open-source developer"?

Our single-payment licenses are no subscriptions.

Example: If you would purchase a single-payment SmartGit license now, you could use SmartGit 22.1 (and probably 23.1) as long as you like (on the operating system versions supported by these SmartGit versions).

I'm afraid not but that's fine, Smargit is a very good tool and deserves this new license policy.

I was wondering about that, that's good to know because it's not clearly stated on the license purchase page. Actually what's currently happening for people who purchased a single-payment (1-year update) SmartGit license for versions priori to 22 (17 for example)? Can they go on using their 17.x forever? Or will they have to purchase an upgrade/renewal to be able to go on using Smargit in 16 days?

(*): or a new single-payment license because the upgrade/renewal is exactly the same price...

I'm in the same boat.  I used SmartGit for many years (paid license) while I was working.  SmartGit is the best GUI client by far, and Syntevo has been great about keeping it up to date. I'm retired now, but continue to contribute to open source projects occasionally to keep my brain working.  I did not meet the 100 commits/year threshold for the open source qualification.  Like you, I would gladly pay $80 for a one-time license for open source and private use, but $300 is a bit much.

I've tried over a dozen GUI git clients, and none of them have the complete set of features that SmartGit has.  git-fork won't work for me because I work in both Windows and Linux.  Strange that they support Mac but not Linux.

Really? The purchase page states:

What we should improve to make it more clear?

If they have purchased 1 year of updates, they can use any SmartGit version that was released within 1 year after the purchase (including all bug fix released even if they were released later) - as long as they like. If they want to use SmartGit 22.1 with a license with updates until 2018, then they would have to order an upgrade/renewal license.

Really? The purchase page states:
My bad, I didn't scroll down and saw the FAQ!
Considering your answer, and this "Non-subscription licenses are valid for an unlimited time (perpetual licenses)" sentence of the FAQ:
  • Lets say I purchased a Single Payment License 3 years ago the 01/01/2020 with 1 year update and the last update 20.2.1 was relased the 01/01/2021. Then I was able to update to this 20.2.1 because the update period of my license was still valid at the 20.2.1 release date (01/01/2021).
  • So today I can still use my single payed licensed of 2020 with Smargit 20.2.1, and I shall be able to use it forever.

Yes, you will be able to use SmartGit 20.2.1 as long as you like (on all operating system versions supported by SmartGit 20.2.1).
