What are the leadiing tilde characters for on tags and branches?

If I select a file in the Files tab and then "Log" to show changes for that file, all the branch and tag markers in the Graph tab have a leading tilde, like "~ mybranch" and "~ mytag".

I searched the change log but couldn't find what this means. Does anyone know?
