The value of non-cognitive indicators of student success
is a hot topic that is gaining credibility and getting the attention of
schools nationwide. Tenacity, Grit, and Perseverance are the "new
black" when it comes to students completing college courses, degree
programs, and overall achieving high levels of
success
in their endeavors. Recently the U.S. Department of Education
published a study referring to grit, tenacity, and perseverance as
"critical factors for success in the 21st century". The executive
summary of the brief states, "The test score accountability movement
and conventional educational approaches tend to focus on intellectual
aspects of success, such as content knowledge. However, this is not
sufficient. If students are to achieve their full potential, they must
have opportunities to engage and develop a much richer set of skills".
The study goes on to ellaborate on non-cognitive skills and the vital
role they play in a student's ability to overcome challenges, meet
goals, and complete their education.
