Dear customer of the SmartComponent Library,
we have just detected two serious issues in OpenEdge 11.0 affecting the ability to use the SmartComponent Library in the Visual Designer of Progress Developer Studio for OpenEdge (formerly OpenEdge Architect). These issues have negative consequences for the ability to maintain SmartViewerControl derived UserControls and adding new instances of SmartDataAdpater derived components (SmartBusinessEntityAdapter, SmartDatasetChildAdapter and SmartTempTableAdapter) on Forms.
We have already reported parts of the issues to Progress technical supports and are still working on easily reproducible cases for others. Today I will have a meeting with Progress development where I’ll also address these issue and make sure that the relevance of these issues is not underestimated.
As we have identified what language constructs cause the issues (SmartViewerControl with ABL signature events based events as a base type for Visual Inheritance, Components with ABSTRACT base classes) we are also investigating the possibilities to release a temporary version of the SmartComponent Library for OpenEdge 11.0 that works around those issues.
For the time being we cannot advise anyone to use the SmartComponent Library for developing new Forms or Viewers on OpenEdge 11.0.
According to our latest tests, the runtime reliability of the SmartComponent Library on OpenEdge 11 is not limited. For running existing Forms on OpenEdge 11 we have not found any issues.
Customers with plans to migrate to OpenEdge 11.0 in the next weeks should come back to us so that we work on a strategy for adressing those issues together. The current state of the communication with Progress Software on those issues can be traced in our Bugzilla.
Mit freundlichen Grüßen / Best regards,
