Hi All,

When searching for "Smart People" on Google, Smart People Magazine comes up as the 14th hit (for me, at least). The first 6-8 results are all related to the 2008 movie "Smart People" with Dennis Quaid and Sarah Jessica Parker...

We can influence the promotion of Smart People Magazine up on the Google search if we all click the "promote" up arrow button at the right of the search item.

A small idea, but even if it won't help greatly, it will not hurt either... :-)

Best Regards,
Avigdor

Hi,

I googled Smart People and got a reference to the magazine, but not its actual website at the top of the second page. Most of the references are to the movie. I had to search for “Smart People magazine” to get to the magazine website.

Best wishes,

Joanna

Avigdor et al.,

first of all, clicking the up arrow has only impact to YOUR search for the term. No impact for the PUBLIC. Not only me but somebody else who is in the online marketing business is confirming this. Following is what he's wrote:

> Not really very true.  Clicking the up arrow  moves it up for you only.
> It has a tiny effect to move it up but nothing like the impact that giving me a launch story about
> it would have.
> The search wikis are available for others to see but they don't move the search up for everyone.
> A few other things that will move it up.
> 1.  Way too much on the front page - Too many articles are causing load time to be too high.
> 107K is about 5 times too large for a main page.  Cut it at least in half.
> 2.  PR 4 is a good start but need more links from sites other than smartpeoplemagazine.com

> "smart", "personal knowledge management", and "knowledge management" (e.g. smart
> knowledge worker) - just think about of which tearm you would use to find a magazine like
> smart people or articles that Smart People magazine is providing, respectively.

In my view backlinks are currently the most crucial element of online marketing and search engine optimization, respectively. Backlinks are links from other websites to Smart People. They would have the most impact if they come from "relevant" sites, sites that match the content of  Smart People (e.g. personal knowledge management, knowledge workers, ...). Therefore we should have something like a partner site, where we can list these backlinks. On the draft website I already have had a business directory where people could apply to be listed (for money (advertising), backlinks, or as partners/supporters) ... An advertising billboard would be an other option ...

Further we need to spread the magazine website through the net. This can be done by submitting it to various search engines (traditional: like yahoo and google; web 2.0/blog: like technorati and blogville.us) . I've done that already for some hundreds manually (one by one) and automatically (bulk submission) - manual submission is better....

So what can you do to spread the SP content through the net

(1) Provide a backlink to Smart People from your website (e.g. http://kwork.org), blog (e.g. http://knowledgemanagement.wordpress.com/support-this/), social network profile (e.g. see links my facebook profile), etc. to Smart People. If you do so contact me first because to have greatest impact the link has to be presented in a specific way (the html code has to have some additionals like alt or title tags ...)

(2) Write about Smart People/mention Smart People and it's content (articles) in your blog (e.g. http://blog.jackvinson.com/), on your social networks (e.g. like Alan did on facebook). Talking about Smart People will rise attention, which will lead to more traffic on the magazine's website, which is also an element for higher search engine ranking, and which is crucial for prospective advertisers on Smart People (high traffic, more people to reach with an ad). When you're talking about Smart People magazine don't use the abbreviation (e.g. SP magazine) use the full term "Smart People magazine" as many times as you can. This will rise the attention of the search engine robots for Smart People, too  ...

(3) Spread the content of Smart People to your social networks on twitter, facebook and others automatically. You can do this for almost all of the Smart People sites (magazine and communities). Here is how it works:
(a) Get a http://twitterfeed.com/ account. There you can create a feed of the Smart People magazine site, which will be send to your twitter account automatically
(b) Use the twitter badge (http://twitter.com/badges) to send your twitter updates to your facebook, Myspace, and other sites
Need a more detailed description: Coming soon (on the weekend, hopefully). Maybe somebody else who can manage to create the process with only these information can write a detailed description and publish it to the group ...

(4) Submit the Smart People magazine website to search engines. As I told you I've already done that for some of them. So far I harvested the search engines I discovered on the following sites (among some others, but without the ones where you have to subscribe to):

When you try to find lists with search engines to submit the Smart People magazine site you may use the following keywords (within quotes, with +, or other search operators, http://www.google.com/support/websearch/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=136861)
- blog search engine website lists directories magazines directory sitemap submission magazine submit ... (be creative!)

Note, when you do a search the results will be totally different for each other. That's because of your searche engine (of course!), your location (country), and search behavior (the search engines learn from you!)

When you submit the website to a search engine you'll need the site url (http://www.smartpeoplemagazine.com/) or the RSS feed url (http://www.smartpeoplemagazine.com/feed/) and at least a description and tags/keywords. Following the description and tags I was using (with variations, depending on the search engines' requirements):

- short description: Smart People Magazine turns corporate knowledge management inside out, brings the power of knowledge work to the mainstream and applies it to living, learning, choosing, creating and working.

- long description: Smart People magazine is an interactive, new media approach to publishing, learning and communication that has just begun and you will participate in the development of something much bigger than a magazine. Smart People magazine turns corporate knowledge management inside out, brings the power of knowledge work to the mainstream and applies it to living, learning, choosing, creating and working. Smart People magazine tells you the who, what, why, when and where – and, most importantly, the how of personal knowledge managment and knowledge work.

- tags: social software,social networking,Knowledge Management,Magazine,Personal Knowledge Management,Social Network,web2.0,PKM,Knowledge Work,Smart People,personal km,knowledge manager,smart people magazine

When you submit Smart People to a search engine send me the link in order to have an overview and to prevent double work. I'll list them in a document provided on our google docs account. So in Future you'll be able to edit this document ...

(5) What else to do:
(a) If you have an account on technorati.com you can favorite Smart People (http://technorati.com/blogs/www.smartpeoplemagazine.com). If you don't have an account I would suggets to get one not only because to favorite Smart People but also to promote your own blog ...
(b) Bump Smart People magazine on millionRSS and get the bump code for your site to let your users bump Smart People (http://www.millionrss.com/feed/Business/Smart-People-magazine-214868.html)
(c) Smart People also has a page on facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Smart-People-magazine/101247195914). An additional presence on facebook in order to integrate the Smart People website updates into facebook, which is not possible on our groups page. Become a fan and tell your friends on facebook about it.

(6) Permanent updates of the Smart People magazine content. The more frequently the website is updated is also crucial for it to get attention by the search robots ...

Ok, enough so far. More would be too much for the moment ...

From sunny South-western Germany,
Boris

Thanks for the great guidelines. Pure gold!

I think these guidelines should be in a wiki page on the Mixxt group - a wiki page dedicated to how to guidelines and ideas for linking and spreading the SP content through the net. Boris, would you add it to the wiki?

I already got a link to the magazine website on the home page of kwork.org. How should I modify the html code to have the impact you describe below?

Thanks,
Avigdor

Joanna.

Yes, Smart People (the magazine) has a lot of work to do to outshine
all the other 'Smart Peoples' in the world. We learned that when we
were researching for Trade Mark.

Hi Avigdor and Joanna,

not great, not gold, just necessary to spread Smart People throught
the net. Btw. Having Smart People on #14 when searching google is very
good for the short time the website is online. As I said it's not
necessary to have Smart People on the search engines top with "Smart
People" as search term. To find such content Smart People magazine is
providing I would never only search for smart people. Would you do? I
would rather search for: smart knowledge work magazine (with this
Smart People magazine is #1 for me) ... On the other side a reference
to Smart People magazine is better than nothing.

Avigdor, don't hesitate to put the stuff I wrote into the mixxt
wiki ...

If you want to check the web popularity of Smart People magazine you
can do the following quick and dirty:

Just search for "Smart People magazine" (WITH quotes!) and check the
hits (right top of the site). Athe the moment I get more than 12000
hits. That's pretty good for the short time the website is online ...

> I already got a link to the magazine website on the home page of kwork.org.

Yes, I have seen it and it is very valuable because AOK is dealing
with knowledge work, knowledge management, etc. In addition the
website is on the web for a long time. The longer a website is on the
web, the more likely is it to appear in the top search results when
searching for a content related term ...

> How should I modify the html code to have the impact you describe below?

Do you know how to modify the source code or are you editing web pages
with any editor? In general you need to add the "alt" and "title" tags
to the image and link code

Image code with alt and title tag:
<img src="..." alt="..." title="...">

Link code with title tag
<a href="..." title="...">

"alt" is standing for alternative image text. It's the text which will
appear when the image isn't showing up for any reason. It will also
show up in a little box when you move over an image with your mouse.
Between the quoutes you can write any text of any length.

Same with the "title" tag. It is the title you can associtate to an
image or a link. Like the "alt" tag it will show up in a little box
when you move over a link with your mouse. As for the image the "alt"
tag will sow up when you move over the image but for search engine
optimization it is an other alternative to have a "title" tag for
images, too. Between the quoutes you can write any text of any length.

In the case of AOK you already added the "Smart People magazine" alt
tag to the magazine's image code but you could also enter a text that
is a whole paragraph. As for search engine optimization it is necesary
to have the relevant key words in the alt tag.

For Smart People these would be "Smart People", "knowledge work", ...
So when I link to the magazine I always use

"Smart People magazine - Digital generations bring personal knowledge
to life"

Relevant keywords: smart, magazine, digital, personal, knowledge

As for the title tags there are any on the AOK website ...

Hope this helps. If not, don't hesitste to ask further

Thanks Avigdor; I didn't realize that would help & I've followed your
advice. In doing so, I noticed that the magazine is not on Wikipedia.

Hi All.

And Avigdor.

Neat! I did what you said, Avigdor, and apparently others have. SP
magazine was #4 on my search and when I clicked on the up arrow it
went to #1.

Another thing I noticed, SP magazine on mixxt was listed #3. Am I
wrong, or should we be promoting the magazine website rather than the
worksite?

All,

For reference...  it shows up in the top slot on my search effort...

And you definitely should be promoting the magazine...   as that is the 'marketing tool'...

Jerry,

as I already replied to Avigdor clicking the up arrow does only change your personal search results. It has no effect for the public search. Further, search engines like google are "learning " from your search behavior. So for when you often search for a term like "Smart People" and you often visit the Smart People managzine website it is likely to be that the website is ranked higher in your nexttime search for "Smart People".

So pls. don't spend too much time on thinking/talking about rankings and stuff. Search engine optimization (SEO), which is the buzz for that, is an art. Some say, make this, others make that but in the end nobody really knows what is working best.

Example:

Once upon a time I created a website. Since then I've nothing done on it. On an other competitor website I'm constantly working (updating, SEO improvement like backlinks, etc.), which is strongly recommended by the SEO experts. And now, surprise! The "silent" website is ranked higher than the "active" one. How comes? No clue!

In general, when s.o. ist telling you I can make it happen that your website will bet top ranked within a short time and this person is going to charge for that expensively it's probably no good deal for you. ...
