Scopes are items you register your SMART app with, and request as your SMART app is authorized. Using scopes, you can request a launch context (from the EHR) or request a specific launch context (when standalone). When your app is launched and receives an access token, your app will also receive the launch context values including patient, encounter, location, etc. according to the scopes you have been granted, the actual state of the EHR (for example, is a patient selected or not), and the EHR support of each context value (for example, does the EHR support the encounter launch context).
