Dear Daniel, dear members
After I had some trouble joining this
distinguish group, I am finally made it. First of all I would like to thank
Daniel for inviting me to this fine group of people. I am honored. I give
you now a quick update what happened in the last few years in order to
fill you all in. As many of you know, I left Swiss Re Zurich in 1997 and
joined Manulife Financial, a Canadian life insurance company, which was
at this time still a mutual insurance company. I am responsible for all
their non-life business, which we write either in Manufacturers P&C
Limited (MPCL), based in Barbados or in Manulife Europe Rueckversicherungs-AG,
based in Cologne. We are solely retrocessionairs, providing property CAT
and aviation capacity to professional reinsurers. I am based in Barbados
and I like it so much that my wife and I bought a house last year. Manulife
demutualized in 1999 and after Manulife bought John Hancock in the US,
Manulife is now one of the largest life insurance company in the world
with a market capitalization of almost USD 50B.
When I moved to Barbados, I started
with golf but my game is as volatile as the business we are in.
I have seen so many names being members
of this group and I am very happy to see that you all moved on with life.
I still remember the good old days, when we met together at renewal meetings
with Pirelli and tried to squeeze some money out of them for the insurance
protections. It was never easy but we always found a fair compromise and
we had a lot of fun. After Dani brought us all back together via e-mail,
Daniel should be appointed to coordinate a get together face to face in
the Madison Beach Hotel in memory of the good old Pirelli days.
For now, I wish you all the best and
I look forward keeping in touch with you.
Kind regards,
Andreas
