to Smart Alternator Regulator

Folks,

Hope this Fall (Spring) is finding all safe and happy.  In case you have not seen it this past week a project Nigel Calder has been involved with for some time was given a sneak peek and I am sure over the coming months it will be a topic of conversation both in the press as well as on forums.  Take a look here and especially make sure to watch the two videos at the end:

It is as one would expect for anything Nigel is involved with a ‘Keen bit of Kit’, but what is perhaps most rewarding to me personally is the validation of many of the capabilities and decisions that went into the VSR Regulator.   In short, I am glad to see technology which we have enjoyed for years (in some cases, many years) being integrated into this new effort.  Just focusing on the regulator part of Nigel’s effort, clearly they have more involved with the alternator and battery.  But some highlights:

·         48v / multi battery chemistry (VSR supporting from 2012)

·         Monitoring of battery current (VSR supporting from 2012)

·         Non-liner alternator pullback based on engine RPMS  -- aka, matching the load curve.  (VSR supporting from 2014)

·         ‘Predictive Alternator Temperature’ control vs. brute force pull-downs  (VSR from 2012)

·         ??  Use of PID regulation engine vs. ‘Analog regulation’ ??   (VSR from 2012)

·         Use of CAN bus for communications (VSR from 2016)

·         Optional integration of engine J1939 CAN  (2016 --  NMEA200 also)

·         Use of RJ45 connectors, daisy-chained for wiring  (Yup, 2016)

·         Battery mounted sensor and remote instrumentation (also 2016)

There are more, including the recognition of engine combustion efficiency in load vs. RPMs (Always fun to watch the Marine Segment come to learn what has been  know for a long time)  (http://smartdcgenerator.blogspot.com/2015/11/another-look-at-dc-generator-efficiency.html).  But perhaps this is enough for now.

And will also share at this point in time,  do not feel too bad for the VSR effort with this announcement.   It has been a busy year for me and this fall there will be some news to share.  Yup, 2019 will be an exciting year in the Marine Electrical space I am sure.

Oh, and I forgot to add – all this plus being based on a truly open protocol (OSEnergy), to allow fellow travelers to integrate and expand the echo system.  Witness the small Dash Display, and the application Rick B. is working on as two examples.
