Conservatory of Classical Ballet? or other?
-------------------------------------------
Any feedback on the Conservatory of Classical Ballet in San Leandro? I have a 5 year old who
would like to take a ballet class. I am looking for a studio where ballet is the focus and
as the children get older they are getting a true classical foundation in dance. In case she
takes to dance, I want more than just running around in costumes. She took classes before at
Kids'n'Dance and did not love them - I think she would like a bit more structure than those
classes offered. For example, she did not really understand what to do when they were acting
out stories in those classes - but she loves going through the routines at her gymnastics
classes where they are very specific about the expectations/movements.

I would love feedback on this school or any other that might fit the bill in the Oakland
area.

Thanks!

East Bay Dance Center Summer camps
-------------------------------------------
Hi all--

There are no recent reviews of the East Bay Dance center summer camps. Does anyone have
recent experience with this program? The price seems reasonable and the camps seems great on
the website. I would love to know how the camp is. My daughter is 9 yrs old and loves to
dance.

Thanks!

Piano lessons for 6 and 9 year old
-------------------------------------------
Hi - We are moving to Berkeley the end of July and I'm looking for a piano instructor for our
6 and 9 year old children. We have had lessons in house and in a conservatory so I don't
really care about the location, but I do care about the instructor. I'm looking for someone
who enjoys working with children and is genuinely happy to teach children a lifelong love of
music. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Lawyer needed for sexual harrassment
-------------------------------------------
My daughter has recently been sexually harassed at school. (breasts grabbed, touched
inappropriately) She reported the incident and the school did not respond. I am looking for
a lawyer for this situation. I am hoping to find one that will work on contingency. Any
advice/referrals will be appreciated. flustered mom

Crow's Feet - Please Be Gone!
-------------------------------------------
With my birthday coming up, I'm reminded how unhappy I am with the crow's feet that are to
the side and underneath my eyes. They make me appear older than I want to, and certainly
older than I feel!

What are the options available for treating these? Do I want botox? Fillers? Something else?
(I have been using Retinol for the last month or so, and doing firming masks, too. They're
not doing a whole lot...yet.)

Along with the type of treatment I should seek, I'd love to know *who* I should see. A Dr in
Oakland, Alameda or Berkeley would be best.
Also, I realize people react differently, but what might I expect in terms of side effects
from your recommended treatment? Puffiness? Bruising? I am *highly* prone to bruising, FYI.

If there are other things I should know that I'm not asking, then please feel free to share
that as well!

Thanks.
Out, Out Damn Crow's Feet

Hanger or Laurence Orthopedic for making a brace?
-------------------------------------------
We are looking into getting a custom made back brace for my child and wondered
if anyone here has worked with either Laurence Orthopedic in Oakland or Hanger
Prosthetics/Orthotics in Oakland (on Hegenberger). Interested in comments on
quality of workmanship but also how they handled working with kids, as I
understand it can take several visits of fine-tuning to get the best fit even
after the brace is made. Thanks so much!

Kaiser Oakland OBGYN
-------------------------------------------
Can someone recommend a Kaiser Oakland OBGYN doctor?
anonymous

Kaiser primary care doctor
-------------------------------------------
I just found out I need to find a new primary care doctor at kaiser Oakland. Does anyone have
any experience with any of the following doctors: Kristen Sueoka, Leah Bowser, Anastasia
Cua, Amanda Wulfstat, or Reenee Nandi?
Laura

Kaiser therapist for children - WC or Oakland
-------------------------------------------
My 10 year old daughter has been having a lot of anxiety the past few months and we'd like to
find someone for her to talk to. She gets worked up over medical appointments, special fun
plans, at school. We are hoping to get to the root of what is causing this for her while we
don't have the stress of school in the mix. Does anyone have experience with anyone in Walnut
Creek or Oakland? Do we need to get a referral from her primary?
Worried mom

Need Psychiatrist Rec for Depressed Teen Son
-------------------------------------------
Looking for a recommendation for a psychiatrist for my 16-year-old son who has had depression
for a very long time, probably since childhood. He's been in therapy for a couple years but
without significant progress. He is compliant, not involved with drugs or alcohol but is very
scared of medication due to a bad interaction with Prozac when we tried to get help through
Kaiser. Need someone very good with smart, anxious and very depressed teen.

Thank you.
Mom of Depressed Teen Boy

Need attachment focused child psychologist!
-------------------------------------------
I am a single parent of a baby girl. I am looking for a good child psychologist who can
provide education to my ex(baby's father) and myself on attachment and child development.
Diane

ObGyn for cesarian, East Bay
-------------------------------------------
I would be grateful for recommendations regarding East Bay ObGyn's with whom
people have had good experiences with C-sections. I had a very bad experience
with my first delivery at Alta Bates (esp. the lack of follow-up by my ObGyn),
and am no longer capable of having a vaginal delivery. I am looking for a new
ObGyn with good bedside manner for a planned C-section, and would appreciate
recommendations. I have a PPO so have no restrictions regarding the provider. Mom-to-be

Physical Therapy at Kaiser Oakland
-------------------------------------------
Looking for a recommendation for a physical therapist at Kaiser Oakland to help
completely rehab a back and hip injury. I'm working with a great chiropractor
who is helping with adjustments and soft tissue work, but need someone who can
help with stretches and exercises to build up flexibility and strength. Thanks

++ Figure drawing class?
-------------------------------------------
i assume you only want figure drawing as opposed to still life. i think it might be tricky to
find figure drawing classes with live models for a 14 year old, but its possible that this
meet up, if approached and explained may work: Linden Street Figure Drawing in...@meetup.com
This is not a class, no instruction, but maybe there is someone who would be willing to just
guide a bit. If still life is interesting to her, The Sawtooth School in the Sawtooth
building does teach all ages. Its one teacher and a few students.

-------------------------------------------
The Frank Bette Center for the Arts hosts a figure drawing group on Tuesday
evenings in Alameda. That's great for practice but it really does help to have a
teacher at least for starters, because drawing the figure is tough and one can
get very frustrated without a bit of direction. What we think we see is not
always what we actually see. On a happier note, when you do come up with a piece
that works, it's so satisfying!

Note, some figure drawing classes feature costumed, clothed, or draped figures;
others feature nudes, and since your daughter is a teen, she may need some
guidance and support on what feels appropriate to her. I took figure classes at
13 and 14, it was my first sight of an actual nude grown man, and I was a bit
flustered and squeamish. I got over it! Parts is parts.
There is an 'atelier' style art teacher in Temescal near Bakesale Betty's. His
work is beautiful but I'd suggest asking to try out his classes. I don't know
what his style is as a teacher.
http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-atelier-school-of-classical-realism-oakland

As a teen I took summer drawing and painting classes at California Academy of
Arts & Crafts, and it was wonderful. Great. Life-changing. Don't know whether
they still have space. http://www.cca.edu/academics/special

If you're unable to find a figure drawing class, please get in touch with me
directly; I might be able to give her a few private lessons to assess what she
needs to work on and get her started. Sometimes basic drawing classes -
rendering, shading, perspective, proportion, composition - contribute more to
the quality of figure drawing than an actual figure model!

++ Guitar teacher for beginner mom and son
-------------------------------------------
I have a recommendation for a GREAT guitar teacher. He is an excellent jazz guitarist. Here's
what he says about himself:
Guitar Lessons: Learn To Sound Just Like ...

... You! That's the idea isn't it? Take all the theory and technique that you learn along
with the chops of your favorite musicians and process it into your own unique voice on the
guitar. I can help you achieve that. My teaching balances what every guitarist needs to know
along with what each individual student wants to know.

I'm a professional musician of over 30 years who's performed with many notable names in Jazz,
R&B, World Music and other genres. I am also an experienced educator having taught ages 6-75
both privately as well as in school and university environments. I bring all of this
experience in order to make music education work for you, the individual.
Reasonable rates, lessons in the convenience of your own home or via internet (Skype /
FaceTime), lessons tailored to meet your goals and lifestyle. I also offer a sliding scale
discount program for families with financial needs. Nobody should be shut out from music.
Feel free to contact me with any questions or to set up a first lesson ...

Hi, I'm 35 and I've been playing guitar most of my life and recently decided I needed
professional help to get me over my plateau. I'm pretty good, but in my head, I'm Eric
Clapton. So I sought out the best I could find in Berkeley. That ended up being Chris
Solberg, former guitar player for Santana, bass player for Chris Isaak, and
multi-instrumentalist for Eddy Money.

He's done wonders with me since I started in September. I now have my first band and we're
getting ready for our first gig. His clients range from young first time players to retired
lawyers finally living out their rock and roll dreams. The nice lady who has the lesson
before me just bought her first guitar and this is her first teacher. The high schooler after
me has been playing music all her life but Chris is helping to get her to explore her musical
abilities. I can go into MUCH more detail if you'd like but I won't take up more space here.
Suffice it to say, once I've taught my 4 year old everything I know, she's going to be his
student too.

Email him at mari...@sbcglobal.net or call (510) 932-5252 and let him know I sent you.

Rock on.

-------------------------------------------
Here at the Professor Sludge Guitar Academy I have been teaching guitar (along with piano,
drums, trumpet, bass, ukelele, and recorder) to kids and adults since 1990. Two students at a
time is usually my maximum class size and most of my teaching is in private one-on-one
lessons. I have tons of experience with both electric and acoustic guitar having played in
bands since the age of 12 (school bands since the age of 8). I have taught many parent/child
combinations. I don't do house calls but am conveniently located close to both Highways 13
and 580 in Oakland. Happy to provide references.

Excellent Guitar Teacher : Pete Madsen. He is organized, flexible, really nice
guy. He does private lessons, organizes excellent group lessons (also really
fun)...
His email: Pete Madsen buzzy...@gmail.com

He has a son so could likely relate to yours.

-------------------------------------------
Hi,
I highly recommend Lisa Zeiler as a guitar teacher for you and your son. My
son took lessons from her for 6 years and loved it! She's great at engaging
kids by choosing songs they really want to learn and she has a knack for
teaching basic skills and even a little music theory while keeping it fun. She
has lots of experience teaching parents and kids together and is also a really
talented musician herself. Her phone number is (415)377-8588. Have fun!
Anne

-------------------------------------------
i have a friend who would love some teaching gigs.

His name is Jon and can be reached at jon.gr...@gmail.com

He is self taught and an international graduate student (UK) in the art history department at
SF State. i do not know much about guitar, so of course you would need to try him out and see
what you think. Good luck in your search!

-------------------------------------------
++ Spanish Tutor Needed for Summer School
-------------------------------------------
Hello,
My name is Natalia, I read that you are looking for a Spanish tutor for your daughter. I am a
native Spanish speaker, I grew up in South America until I moved to the U.S. 12 years ago.
I am a graduate student, I will finish my doctorate next year. I'm currently at home taking
care of my 4 month old baby, so your daughter could come over to my place for tutoring, I
live in Emeryville. I am also a therapist and a former summer school teacher.
Please let me know if you would be interested, I would love to help.
nabe...@hotmail.com

-------------------------------------------
I am happy to recommend my young friend Lorena to be your spanish tutor. I think she'd be a
great fit for this - see the following note and feel free to contact her directly!

My name is Lorena Arriola, I am 20 years old and have completed sophomore year at Lewis and
Clark College in Portland, Oregon. I have experience tutoring and professional training for
the writing center at my college, and I am bilingual. I have worked with numerous mentorship
and summer programs, and am currently coordinating the duo mentorship program at Lewis and
Clark. I am a dedicated student, a passionate educator, and a hard worker. Email me and I'll
be happy to send my resume and references. Lorena Arriola larr...@lclark.edu

++ Tap dance for adults
-------------------------------------------
I've tried out two different adult tap dance classes in the last year, one in
Oakland and one in Lafayette. I'm currently taking classes at Bay Area Rhythm
Tap (http://www.bayarearhythmtap.com/) with Debbie Sternbach. She offers classes
at several levels: I started with her Intro to Tap classes, which have been a
lot of fun and are well-paced for adult beginners. She also offers Advanced
Beginning and Intermediate classes.

Another option if you have some previous experience is Lamorinda Theatre Academy
(http://www.lamorindatheatreacademy.com/). Renee DeWeese has just started a
Tuesday 5:30 pm tap class for teens & adults. I went to the first meeting this
week, and it's a little too fast-paced for a beginner like me, but there were
six other women taking the class who seemed to be keeping up. Renee's a lot of
fun--I took my first tap classes from her last summer, but the class fizzled out
when school started.

-------------------------------------------
Call Katie at Katie's Dance Studio in El Cerrito
http://www.katiesdancestudio.com/katiesdancestudio/welcome.html. Been in business for
40+years, they offer jazz, hip hop, lyrical, ballet, and specialize in TAP! They are
preparing for their fantastic annual recitals...June 22 & 23 at 6 pm, at El Cerrito High.
Tickets are $15....come see if it's the place for you! You can join a class over the summer
or when the new season starts in September. Katie's daughter also runs a studio, in
Hercules: Broadway Rhythm Dance Studio http://www.broadwayrhythmdanceco.com. Dance Mom

-------------------------------------------
The Beat in Berkeley is what you are looking for: it focuses on adult classes and is a
fantastic place to take tap dancing. You can check out the current class schedule on their
website for what is available in the evening, as I am told by my instructor that it is
current: http://www.theberkeleyperformingarts.org.

One thing - you didn't mention if you have tap experience. So you know, the level of
instruction is fairly advanced for most classes and assumes a tap or dance background. The
only truly beginner level class is ''Intro To Tap,'' which looks like it is just offered on
the weekends. Whatever your level, I totally recommend the place - I have been taking lessons
there for many years and I keep coming back!

++ Tennis lessons for kids in Oakland - Group Private
-------------------------------------------
My 3-year old tennis enthusiast really took to the ANTS tennis coaches at the
recent lake merritt festival. The organization seem to have just moved here from
new mexico and the premise is great: equipment and nets scaled down just for
kids. http://www.antstennis.com/organization/ good luck.

++ CBT for anxious or OCD child
-------------------------------------------
Hi, there. I can heartily recommend my partner, Dr. Callum Eastwood. Our office is located in
Market Hall/Rockridge. Dr. Eastwood is an expert in the field of child behavioral medicine,
consults for a very well-
regarded pediatrician in her large practice, and has a wealth of knowledge matched by a warm
and steady presence. He has a boutique practice in which he specializes in working with
children, teens, and parents as it relates to anxiety, impulsivity, depression, and stress
management. He utilizes primarily third wave CBT techniques such as mindfulness skills
building and DBT, but also, with children, uses play therapy so that the techniques are
experienced by the child in vivo, rather than as a stilted lesson.

I highly recommend you contact him to see if he has availability. He can be reached at
510-459-4837.

Karin Vandervoort, PsyD, MA

-------------------------------------------
++ Dr. Caroline Johnson, Neuropsych
-------------------------------------------
Dear worried mama,

Caroline Johnson is wonderful, kind and very knowledgeable. We met with her for a
consultation and she explained the whole process in detail. She did our child's neuropsych
assessment last summer and all of the information has been very helpful. We continue to call
or meet with her for follow up questions and advice. Make an appointment with her and get on
her waiting list now. You can decide if she is a good fit for your son. Good luck--it is a
hard road, but she is wonderful and will really help you figure things out. another mom

-------------------------------------------
Hi - I have two kids with learning issues and Dr. Johnson has evaluated both of them. She is
very kind and great with kids, advocates for you with the school district if your child needs
help, and should qualify for special services. She also knows her stuff. I have been told
by my pediatrician and my son's developmental pediatrician that she is ''the best.'' She is
also very honest. My son has disabilities but she told us when he was evaluated that he did
not qualify for special ed services because at the time of the testing it was not interfering
with his ability to learn. (My son has AD/HD). That wasn't what we wanted to hear,
necessarily, but was her honest opinion. That was five or six years ago. She is testing my
daughter now and advocating with the school for better services for her. My daughter is very
bright, but has pretty severe dyslexia. Because Dr. Johnson is a straight shooter, the
schools and judges (if you have to go to hearing to get what you need) also respect her
opinion. The down side of having a great reputation is that she is extremely busy. It
usually takes several months to get appointment times to have your child evaluated. With my
daughter we got appointments about six months in advance. She was good about getting the
intial report within three or four weeks. The first time we used her it took longer to get
the report. She is in demand and extremely busy, attending meetings at schools, etc. in
addition to doing the testing. Hope that helps.
Mom with special kids

-------------------------------------------
Dr. Johnson (Kie) has assessed my daughter twice - in third and eighth grades. She is
wonderful in every way. She is extremely experienced and knowledgable. She is completely
professional. She is GREAT with kids. She has great respect for the children and families
with whom she works. I can't sing her praises highly enough. She can also become an
advocate for your child, with schools, teachers, etc. - explaining how your child works and
what s/he needs. My daughter's issues were different than your son's but I think you cannot
go wrong with Dr. Johnson. We learned a great deal that helped us and our daughter..
Grateful Mom

-------------------------------------------
I cannot say enough good things about Kie Johnson. She is a consummate Pediatric
Neuropsychologist--
highly skilled, experienced and attuned to both parents and children. As a therapist, I have
referred kids to her many times, always with very satisfying results. And as a mother, we
asked her to evaluate our son many years ago for some learning issues in an otherwise
extremely intelligent kid (he went on to get a PhD). As the wife of a neuropsychologist, I
know my husband has enormous respect for both her work and her person. RE: your other
questions, don't get ahead of yourself! Let Kie take a look at your son and she will help
you with some direction.

Good luck
Heidi Berrin Shonkoff

-------------------------------------------
We had a Pediatric Neuro-psych Evaluation done for our child who sounds quite similar to your
son. We also had our child tested at the Gifted Development Center (GDC) in Denver,
Colorador. Both sets of test results were very helpful though if there is a chance your child
is highly or profoundly gifted, I would have him tested at the GDC before getting the
Neuro-psych evaluation. It was finding out the level of giftedness in our child, and what
that meant, from life-long professionals in the field, that really started the process of
improvement in our child's life and in our family life. We also have considerable
experience with the challenges stemming from raising a twice-gifted child... who is both
highly gifted and has ADD/ depression/ anxiety issues. If it would be of value, I'm happy
to share more with you about our experience with all these tests, with numerous schools, and
with the therapy and medication options we've tried. (If you'd like to talk more, please ask
the Moderator for my contact info.)

By the way, I do not know Caroline Johnson but Cynthia Peterson, who, I believe, shares an
office with Caroline, did our Pediatric Neuro-psych Evaluation and was excellent.
Wishing you all the best!

-------------------------------------------
++ Low monthly payment dental plan?
-------------------------------------------
We have no insurance as my husband is self employed, and for years we've been
going to Dr. Michael at Old Oakland Dental. The have set up payment plan for us
so we use it for regular checkups and if any dental work is needed. Makes it way
more affordable!
Valerie A

-------------------------------------------
++ Pediatric PT or OT at Kaiser
-------------------------------------------
My son received PT at Kaiser Richmond at age four and we were very happy with the service.
Alyson Zuppero was the PT and all it took was our pediatrician writing an referral. If you
go to your pediatrician with a letter from the school saying that the teachers recommend a PT
screen at the very least, that should do the trick to start you off. Once Alyson meets your
child, she should be able to determine whether ongoing services are warranted and make it
easy to access if so.
Good luck!
Amy

-------------------------------------------
++ Pediatrician at kaiser walnut creek?
-------------------------------------------
Our pediatrician is Dr. Rona Bar-Din at KP Walnut Creek. We really like her. Because of the
various times when we've needed appointments immediately, we have met almost all of the
pediatricians there, and I have to say, we haven't had one yet that we didn't like. We've
been especially impressed with the doc who's the head of the department - I think his name is
Dr. Berger (or something like that). Hope that helps.
Really like Kaiser Walnut Creek

-------------------------------------------
++ Recs for Acupuncturist, Reflexology
-------------------------------------------
I suggest Aida Men and AnnSheng Chinese Medicine Clinic in Alameda - 510-749-9630

She is amazing - has worked with both me and my son for differing issues (one
neurological/auto-
immune, the other severe eczema) and is a miracle worker. You do have to be ready to commit
to her system (diet, herbs, acupuncture) but I believe she can fix anything.
You can let her know that I referred you - Maggie Harmon ma...@pacbell.net

-------------------------------------------
++ Surgeons - Dr. Stanten, Moorstein, or Jenkins?
-------------------------------------------
Go with Dr. Moorstein! I don't know the other surgeons but I know Dr. Moorstein.
He is fantastic. He is a wonderful, caring doctor. He is not pretentious at all.
He is a straight shooter. I can't comment on technique, scarring, etc., because
my attempted laproscopic surgery with him in 2005 morphed into full on surgery
because he couldn't find the part of my colon he needed to find and remove
otherwise. I was fine with that, he found and removed my stage two colon cancer.
I have a lot of scar tissue from earlier fertility-related surgeries which I'm
sure complicated the matter. He also assisted my ob/gyn in doing my 2007
hysterectomy/oopherectomy, because he already knew what my guts looked like.
Before the hysterectomy I had extensive fibroid bleeding, and after he had a
blood test run he told me to get to the hospital ASAP for blood transfusions as
my blood volume was very low. My ob/gyn at the time should have supervised my
care for the transfusions but I asked Dr. Moorstein to and he did. I still see
Dr. Moorstein every 6 months for follow-up, more than 7 years later, during
which he gives me a general look see and running labs. I was a cancer patient
and he follows them up carefully, although he continues to see me more than 5
years later because I have a genetic predisposition towards cancer so he wants
to follow me extra carefully. Oh, you will not regret choosing Dr. Moorstein.
And his office staff is very sweet, especially Katherine. If you have more
specific questions you may e-mail me at AmyH...@aol.com
Amy, a big fan of Dr. Moorstein

-------------------------------------------
Dr. Moorstein is great! I had a procedure done with him a couple of years ago, and couldn't
have been happier with him. He was extremely responsive to questions and concerns, both
before and after the procedure, and made me feel far more comfortable about the whole thing.
I wish he could be my regular GP!

++ Therapist for a Nervous Skeptic? Montclair N.Oakl.
-------------------------------------------
Hi there,

I am Eric, I have spoken with Todd Harvey in the past. Yes I know he is not a women! And
he is still one of the easiest people to talk to! He just has that way about him that I
thought he wanted to help right from the start! He has a way to get people on the right
track.
Please call him, It will be a great start!

++ chiropractors & acupuncturists for breech baby
-------------------------------------------
I went to Stephanie Doucette. She's an acupuncturist in Berkeley with a lot of training &
experience with pregnancy. 510-495-5752. She instructed me in a protocol using moxibustion,
which I was able to carry out at home. She was caring and helpful and my baby did turn!
