About half way through the first season, Baki returns to Japan to fight in the underground arena and subsequently becomes the champion. Much of the second half of this season is spent watching Baki defend his title. Although the outcome is pretty obvious, the fights are still very exciting to watch. Yujiro also makes many appearances and also has a match in the underground league. I should also point out that Baki has spent what seems to be 2 years in Japan fighting underground since his return at 15. Much like Hajime No Ippo. We all expect Baki to win, but the fights are intense and there are many moments where victory looks bleak.
The first season actually aired in January of 2001. I don't know if I would necessarily classify this time period as the height of the Street Fighter Era, but the time line is not too far off. I would say its more trailing the Street Fighter initial hype.
I would have to agree with you about the art style. If you have seen Street Fighter 2V you will notice the freakish size of many character's muscles in the show. Baki is no different, and the freakish muscles get bigger in the second season (soon to be posted on Silent Divergence).
@thelocust619: oooo, i thought you were referring to their fight at the tokyo dome. Yeah Baki did lay him out, knocked out a tooth too to boot. But it also seemed like he kinda blide-sided him, that and Baki was already going all out while Pickle just unintentionally interrupted their fight. (not that I think baki couldn't take Pickle at this point if they went round 2)
wrong. baki lost two times to pickle til the point where pickle interfered baki and yujiros fight. bakis punch did not ko pickle, and pickle deliberetely sit down and watched because he got the point that he was not to interfere by his friend baki.

@thelocust619: shut him down now means that someone loses a teeth, without any other visible injury? So the 150y old china guy "shut down" yujiro because yujiro was staggered and had nose bleed? Shutting down someone now means surprising someone the same way pickle surprised baki and one shot him? Training against an imaginary 100kg insect and defeating mr oliva is now enough to defeat pickle? Fact is, baki lost twice to pickle and did not defeat pickle, nor someone who is equal or above to pickle.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure isn't the only anime adaptation known for some truly strange moments. The story which follows the would-be strongest fighter in the world, Baki Hanma, has announced that the second season of its latest series is arriving sooner than you might expect. Keeping up with tradition, the upcoming installments will see the son of Yujiro Hanma and his comrades fighting against a prehistoric threat. We promise you, fans are not ready for the arrival of Pickle the Caveman.
Baki The Grappler, the original title for the series, focuses on the son of the strongest man in the world. Rather than hoping to stop his father, Yujiro Hanma, for the benefit of mankind, Baki is seeking to become stronger than his "dear old Dad" to get revenge for the death of his mother while also overcoming his parent. Since the series first debuted in 1991, it has continued following Baki's journey since in the pages of the manga. This upcoming season will feature two separate arcs, the first diving into Baki and his friends' fight against the aforementioned Neanderthal known as Pickle, and the second half promising the long-awaited rematch between the anime's star and his father.
The first half of the next season of Baki Hanma will arrive on Wednesday, July 26th, and will focus on "The Tale of Pickle & The Pickle War Saga". The second half, "The Father Vs Son Saga", will arrive on Thursday, August 24th. Between these two arcs, expect some of the wildest, most brutal battles of the series so far as Baki tackles both a caveman and his own father.
As it stands, a third season of Baki Hanma hasn't been confirmed by Netflix. Baki hasn't fought his father since the fateful night when Yujiro killed his mother, meaning that it has been years for the fighting protagonist since he tangled with his dad. With the accomplishments that Yujiro Hanma has shown off over the course of the series, Baki's victory is far from assured though he certainly has come a long way since his teenage years that first kicked off the franchise.
The 24-episode anime adaptation "Baki the Grappler" aired on TV Tokyo in early 2001, followed immediately by a second set of 24 episodes that also aired in 2001. In 2018, a new anime series simply titled "Baki" continued the story on Netflix. A second and final season of "Baki" released on Netflix in 2020. "Baki Hanma: Son of Ogre" came to Netflix in September 2021, and another season was confirmed in March 2022 (via Collider).
The story continues in "Baki," which premiered on Netflix in 2018. The first season focuses on five inmates who break out of prisons around the world and come to Tokyo for a battle royale. Promoter Mitsunari Tokugawa warns Baki Hanma that five violent death row escapees from around the world are all heading for Tokyo.
Similar to the first season, the Maximum Tournament cleans up much of the graphic violence. This leaves some of the fights having strange endings and undermines some of the characters, but the season is still very strong on the whole.
The Baki and Baki Hanma anime series can be streamed in their entirety on Netflix. The first season of Baki also received a DVD release in some regions with a new dub that differed from the one added by Netflix.
