Frere-Jones' Interstate typeface, while optimal for signage, has refinements making it suitable for text setting in print and on-screen, and gained popularity as such in the 1990s. Due to its wide spacing, it is best suited for display usage in print. Frere-Jones later designed another signage typeface, Whitney, published by Hoefler & Co., that bears a resemblance to its ancestor while being less flamboyant and more economical for general print usage, in body copy, or in headlines.
The terminals of ascending and descending strokes are cut at an angle to the stroke (see lowercase t and l), and on curved strokes (see lowercase e and s), terminals are drawn at a 90 angle to the stroke, positioning them at an angle to the baseline. Counters are open, even in the bold and bold condensed weights, further contributing to legibility. Punctuation is based on a rectangular shape, while official FHWA punctuation is based on a circular shape.
The font is used by a number of large organizations in their logotype and branding materials. In 2004, the Weather Channel started using the fonts on-air and on IntelliStar systems. It was added to TWC's WeatherSTAR XL in a graphical update in 2005. It was mainly retired in 2008, for Helvetica Neue and Akzidenz-Grotesk; however, the font continued to be used on IntelliStar systems until November 2013, as part of a rebranding.
On January 29, 2005, the Indonesian television broadcaster SCTV using the current logo that its "SCTV" lettermark being the modified version of Interstate Black, while initially used Interstate as its branding font for its programming promotion. However, in the following years, the network's programming promotion font changed into the various fonts in the following years, while the "SCTV" wordmark on its logo remain intact since been.
The current Sesame Street sign/logo uses this font in Compressed Bold.Radio times and the Daily Mirror newspaper use the font in their TV guide and headlines.Virgin Media 360 use it on their interface.
Adobe font Interstate has been working fine now the "Regular Interstate" is not showing. All other styles are showing in the list. It's activated in the Creative Cloud font manager. I've closed the app serveral times and double checked everything I know to check. I've been using this Adobe font for years.
Is it "filed separately" in the font list after a re-activation? Some fonts get separated at installation or activation, for no good reason I know of, so that you have two or three family entries for what is basically one font groujp. Search your whole font list for 'interstate' and see if it shows up mis-categorized.
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask this so forgive me if it is not. The standard font for US Interstates in my installation of ArcMap is corrupt or missing as you can see by my attached image. Can someone tell me the name of the font so I can locate it and fix the issue. I can't seem to find the font name.
Thanks for the suggestions. The symbol that is giving my problems is a text symbol so the shields marker symbol set is not working for what I'm trying to do. I've attached another screen shot that shows where I'm trying to access the text symbol (Layer Properties -> Labels-> Label Styles (button) ). I haven't had any luck finding the system font, but I was able to find a fix by just labeling my interstates with a basic text symbol and adding a shield as a marker symbol behind it. If anyone does come across the system font name based on my latest screen shot, let me know. Otherwise as I said I found a work around.
I tried changing the weights or adding that in the name but it just goes to a default font. The only way Interstate works is if I just write "Interstate," but the bold works but it does not give me the black category.
If you want to use the Interstate Black Condensed version of the font I would recommend using a tool to generate a font face declaration for it, while converting the file for web use. This generator should do the trick:
