Austrianstudio Coop Himmelb(l)au's rooftop extension on Falkestrasse in Vienna was one of the earliest completed deconstructionist buildings. Continuing our series reinvestigating the style, we look at the dramatic loft conversion.

"So we went to the mayor and he said these things we had made are not an architecture thesis this is art," Prix added. "And I said please write that down as art cannot be controlled by codes. The only codes we followed were for safety."

One of the earliest buildings designed in an emerging style, the rooftop extension completed in 1988 and was included in the seminal Deconstructivist Architecture exhibition at the MoMA the same year.

Despite its relatively small size, the project drew a great deal of attention and was a significant moment for both the studio and deconstructivism as it showed these radical schemes could actually be built.

Coop Himmelb(l)au recently completed an art complex in Shenzen with an irregular form made from stone and shimmering glass and a faceted steel and angular glass building for the Muse des Confluences in Lyon.

I just started using SketchUp Make and I need to find a way to put maximum solar modules on rooftops automatically. You can see one of the roofs and unfolded version that PV modules are put as well in the picture below. The problem is that these modules cannot be put in-line so it is needed to be placed as in the picture (rectangular ones are the modules). Is there any way to do it by using any extensions or programming?

Hello, thanks for fast response. We actually now are doing it manually but it is not convenient to do it by hand when you want to prepare like 100 roofs at the same time. But I will check Skelion for sure, thanks.

From the Architect: "In the Bomenbuurt, a 1930s neighborhood located between the center of The Hague and the beach, the founder of Bloot Architecture designed and helped build a roof extension for his family on top of their existing apartment.

"The urban fabric of the Bomenbuurt consists of three-layer building blocks that are built close to each other, so adding an extra layer on top of the existing buildings has a lot of impact on the immediate surroundings. As a volume, the roof structure is subtly integrated into the context, but its form language and materialization contrast with the brick architecture of the 1930s district.

"The roof extension offers space for three bedrooms. The two smaller bedrooms are for the children and the primary bedroom is for the whole family. In addition to a sleeping area for the parents, this room also has a sitting area, a toilet, and a pantry. The pantry ensures that the outdoor space can be used as fully as possible. The entire long side of the primary bedroom consists of glass sliding doors. Because the new construction lies on top of the existing construction, there is room to conceal the window frames flush. As a result, inside and outside flow seamlessly into each other. The steel fencing that runs vertically behind the wooden decking emphasizes this feeling of infinity.

"With a roof extension on top of this kind of architecture it is necessary to continue the existing chimneys to the new roof. The offsets that the chimneys give in the floor plan have been used in this design to program the walls with cupboard space and in the small bedroom the chimney playfully divides the room into a sleeping and living area.

"The infill of the minimal steel skeleton of the roof extension is entirely done with timber framing and flax insulation. All interior walls and ceilings are made of birch plywood. The birch plywood doors are framed seamlessly in the walls, or they slide alongside the toilet and pantry. The even, light gray color of the resin floor forms a fresh and sleek contrast to the warm wooden interior.

"The space that became available on the existing second floor has been included in this renovation and has been converted into a bathroom. The birch plywood walls continue via the stairs into the bathroom. The existing ceiling has been taking away and the old beams are made visible. The part of the ceiling that is not covered by the extension is insulated with cork. Concrete panels and pale blue hexagon tiles complete the warm pallet of this bathroom.

"The outside of the roof extension is covered with steel seam cladding. Both the roof and the walls have this cladding, so that the building can be read as an unambiguous volume. This makes it stronger in its contrast to the brick underworld. The steel seam cladding has a certain degree of reflection, so that the building colors with the light of the day. In addition to the fact that the roof extension forms a contrast, it is also a recognizable addition as it is reminiscent of the classic Parisian roofs, which often consist of zinc roofs placed as a vertical ending on top of a stone structure."

The Tuff Stuff Rooftop Tent ladder extension provides an additional 21" of height to your rooftop tent ladder. Simply slide the ladder arms into the aluminum body, drill the pin location to accommodate your necessary height, and enjoy. We also give you an extension for your annex room that zips under our tents so the ladder extension and lower annex room can be used together.

This rooftop house extension was the first project MVRDV realised in its hometown of Rotterdam. Situated on top of an existing historical building and atelier, the bedrooms are conceived as separate houses, optimizing the privacy of every member of the family. The houses are distributed in such a way that a series of plazas, streets and alleys appear as a mini-village on top of the building, a kind of heaven for its inhabitants.

The houses are distributed in such a way that a series of plazas, streets and alleys increase the feeling of a village on top of a building. Parapet walls with windows surround the new village. Trees, tables, open-air showers and benches are added, optimizing the rooftop lifestyle. By finishing all elements with a blue poly-urethane coating a new "heaven" is formed. It creates a crown on top of the house.

The addition can be seen as a prototype for the further densification of the existing city. It adds a roof life to the city. It explores the costs for the beams, infrastructure, and extra finishes, and it ultimately aims to be lower in cost than the equivalent ground price for the building.

There are two major changes in the General Permitted Development Order (GPDO), which came into effect in August 2020. Several new Permitted Development Rights for rooftop extensions and new dwellings have been introduced. These new rights make it easier for homeowners and developers to add more space or build more homes. They are part of an initiative to revitalise town centres and remove planning obstacles.

The rules are different depending on the type of property you own; residential or commercial. Furthermore, there are differing rules for residential and commercial subtypes, i.e. flats, maisonettes, pubs, offices and industries.

These new Permitted Development Rights apply to certain commercial, residential and mixed-use buildings. Due to the format of the GPDO, the Permitted Development Rights are split up in different Parts, under several Classes.

This first part of the new Permitted Development Rights concerns changes within the curtilage of a house. Class AA will allow you to extend by up to two storeys directly above the existing house. If your building is single storey, you are limited to one additional storey.
