Greetings from beautiful New England where we are safe from hurricanes and enjoying the autumn colors. I hope you are all safe and healthy. I wanted to send out a note to the Small Collections Roundtable of a couple of retirements from our group. There might be more. We tend to disappear quietly since there isn’t anyone else at our institutions to send notes to CEAL on our behalf.

First of all, today is Yuh-fen Benda’s last day at Vanderbilt University. She wanted to go out quietly, but I have decided not to honor her wish because she has been a great Small Collections colleague, and I think we will all like to wish her a happy retirement in spirit. I think Yuh-fen has been a Small Collections member from its very beginning in 2004, or soon after. I have relied on her for help with Taiwanese materials, and have been happy to help her where I could with Japanese things.

Next week is my retirement. In my case, I wanted to send a note to all of you to thank you for all your support and collaboration over the years as we figured out how to help our faculty and students with limited budgets and language skills. I feel like we all were much stronger together and I have been so grateful not to have felt isolated at all. Rather I am proud at how well our students have done and many have gone on to hold their own at the big institutions for graduate work. As special thanks goes to those of you who read picture books with me during COVID. I loved that and will be picking that project up again once my time is my own. I hope that I might continue to ask some of you for help. And, of course, you are always welcome to send me email and I will do what I can to help you with what you need.

Again, thank you and send some good vibes out to Yuh-fen (and me if you feel like it). Also, if any of our other small collections folks have retired, could you let me know please?

All the best from me,

Sharon Domier

Dear Sharon,

Thank you for letting us know that you and Yuh-fen are retiring. Congratulations to both of you!

I am feeling happy and sad at the same time. Happy for you two's well-deserved retirement. Sad to see you leave our profession. I've grown so used to seeing you both at CEAL meetings and hearing from you on listservs.

I truly appreciate your voice and support for our small East Asian collections/librarians' community for as long as I can remember.

Best wishes to your new chapter and come back to visit us (at the annual meeting if you can)!

Xi

Hi Sharon, Yuh-fen and all,

I am sending Julie's message on her behalf due to tech issues with her university email system.

----------------------

Hi Sharon:

Thank you so much for sharing the news of Yuh-fen’s retirement. I believe she is having a good time in Japan now:). You did the right thing, and Yuh-fen deserves to be honored as a long-time and active member of the Small Collection.

Sharon, as the funder of the Small Collection Roundtable, you have contributed significantly to the group through your leadership and collaboration with all solo librarians. We appreciate your dedication.

Yuh-fen and Sharon: I’m honored to know both of you and have worked with you for many years. With both of you leaving now, I’ll miss the good times we met at CEAL every year and other occasions, such as workshops in Korea and conferences in China and Taiwan.

I hope you both will pursue your passions in the new stage of your lives. Enjoy it, enjoy it, and enjoy it.

Best wishes,

Julie

Hi Sharon and all,
Hey everyone, I apologize for the late response—I've been busy recovering from my recent trip to China at the beginning of the month. It was an amazing experience, but between the travel and getting back into my routine, I've been a bit slow to catch up on things. I just saw this message and wanted to take a moment to send my heartfelt congratulations. Happy retirement, Sharon and Yuh-fen! I hope you both enjoy this exciting new chapter of your lives. You've made such an impact, and I wish you all the best in the years ahead!
Amei
