We have used NiFAST's Flashpoint Fire Safety Training for Colleges for 3 years. I am wondering if:

1. anyone else on the list uses them and what you think of them, and,

2. if you have a better method for delivering fire safety awareness training for incoming students then NiFAST offers (http://nifast.org/colleges.php)?

Thanks.

Hi John,
We seriously considered using this program, but ended up using a video on Dorm Fire Safety that we already had. The initial plan was to have every student on campus take the training the first year and then only incoming freshman and transfer students in subsequent years. NiFAST would have worked with us on billing, but I still think the bottom line we didn't go with it was that we had a less expensive option available.
Have a great day!

We are not getting complete support for this program, but our understanding is the HEO Act requires us to do something. So the Flashpoint program allows us to send the incoming student a link to training, they take it from home at their convenience, and then we have a record of completion to refer to in case we are ever asked if anyone has taken the training. Unfortunately, since word is getting out that it's not mandatory, we are getting only about 50% participation, but it's better than nothing. I just wondered if anyone found a better solution to comply with the HEOA mandate.

Could this requirement be fulfilled with a blackboard?

Perhaps. I know some people think in terms of, "what is the least I can do and still meet the letter of the law," and others think in terms of "what is the best I can do to reach the spirit of the law." We tend to operate in the latter, which to us means, 1. solid information, 2. delivered in a way that is hard to ignore, 3. resulting in a fire-wise campus, 4. further resulting in fewer summons to the fire department/EMS service, 5. hopefully with the benefit of saving some loot! This program gives us most of that, we just have no "teeth" to compliance at the moment. But we are working on it.

Hi John,

I am not familiar with NiFAST but I just got back from a great one and a half day Campus Fire Wise train-the-trainer session funded through FEMA. Most all expenses were covered an they gave free training materials and DVDs to take home. Their website :

http://www.firewisecampus.org/

Gustavus Adolphus College also worked with the Minnesota State Fire Mashall's Office and others to create a College Fire Safety Presentation that is posted on their Educational Material Resource webpage. They also have a generic College Fire Safety Brochure:
