Greetings,

Would like some feedback on program requirements from your college and/or regulatory reference regarding use of protective valve caps while gas cylinder is set up in a lab (typically tied to a fume hood).

The standard phrase found is:  Regulators must be removed from the cylinders when not in use and replaced with the safety cap.

What is the time limit ? - when would you require a researcher to remove the regulator and install the protective cap?  If the cylinder has not been used for a week, month, semester?

OSHA 1010.101 references Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet P-1-1965. Don't see any specifics to address this.

Thanks,
Michael

Hi Mike,

My understanding is that if the compressed gas cylinder is connected to some equipment, it is considered in use. Other than that, I have no clear definition to go with at this point either. I'm going to do some asking around as well.  Have a good day!
