Does anyone know of an expert in gas fired kiln safety for ceramic applications?    We have a concern and need an expert.

It appears everyone is on vacation but me.  This is my third post with no response.

Check with the folks at TN Tech Univ. The faculty who operate their kiln are great.

I’ll answer what I can or consult with my faculty, we are currently running gas, electric and a wood fired kilns and are exploring an earthen kiln firing.

Thanks for your response.  Here is a brief description of the issue:

We have a situation where the ceramics department has requested several modifications in the gas delivery equipment over several  years for some  in-house made kilns that obviously do not have manufacturer instructions.   We have been relying on the instructor to know what he is doing.   For the most recent modification, the maintenance department has raise some safety concerns regarding the gas supply lines, shut offs, etc.   There has been no overall engineering planning as this area has evolved over time.  We are state funded and funds are limited at this time.   Our engineering department made contact with an engineer who referred us to the Fuel Gas code, Section 407 and 629.  We are not sure if there are other codes and regulations apply.  Here are my questions:

1.      Do you know of an expert that we might hire to evaluate this area and make recommendations?

2.      What codes or standards apply to educational applications of ceramic kilns?

3.      Does someone have a good ceramic kiln management program that could be shared with us?

Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

Thanks

I second Suzanne's recommendation. Mona is who you want or can direct you to someone who can help you.

Your questions sound less related to kilns than gas plumbing which unless you have concerns with the kiln itself, another resource that might be a bit easier to track down would be a local gas fire place installer. They are going to be pretty good on the code because they have to pass the local inspectors requirements and they get more cash if they can charge you for an extra shut off valve.

Good luck and best wishes,

Kent
