Hello all,

They are thinking of doing some restructuring here at Reed.  Can I ask who the other colleges report?  If anyone reports to facilities, how is that working...positives and negatives?

our structure at Gordon College is: E.H.&S. ---> Dir. of Physical Plant --->V.P. Finance ---> College President
Seems to be working fine. I do not do any lab safety-related functions so there is no one from sciences in the matrix

Hi Cathy –

 

I have reported to the Director of Facilities for the past 15 years and it has worked well for me.  It really depends upon the people and how safety is viewed.

 

I believe that I have gotten greater buy-in from the Facilities trades by my presence in the same building thereby interacting with them on a daily basis.

I report to the Asst VP of Facilities and then to the Exec VP Finance. My office is in the same building as all the Facilities folks (Grounds, Maintenance, Custodial, Police). I echo the response that it’s all about the people. Some academics work better with me than some in my division.

I report to the Sr. Director of Plant Operations then V.P. of Business & Finance.  Being part of the Plant Operations department has its advantages, as far as better accessibility to your core group, but it can also work against you. It really all depends on the safety consciousness of your department head and what their priorities are.

Here at the University of Dubuque EH&S reports to V.P. Finance who reports to the College President.

I report to the Assist VP of Facilities who in turn reports to the VP of Finance and Administration.  I would be happy to discuss over the phone the negatives and positives, but like I tell my boss, it is like the fox guarding the henhouse.

I report to the Executive Director of Facility and Planning. He's also responsible for other areas such as Public Safety/ Planning and Design/ Administrative Services (e.g. printing/ delivery/ property management/ records management).  The Exec. Director reports to the V.P. of Administration and Finance.

Here EHS reports to the Assistant VP of Operations who reports to the VP of Finance and Administration who reports to the President.  Works well for us given we're in the center of the action regarding projects and facilities but I need to always be conscious of bridging the gap with the academic side (which hasn't been a problem).

I report to the VP for Academic Affairs, who reports to the President.

If I could choose my reporting structure, I would prefer to report to the VP for Finance and Administration. I would then report to the same person that Public Safety and Facilities report to (and risk management is managed by the VP for Finance and Administration).

On Monday we were reporting to the CIO/Associate VP who reports to the VP of finance, effective Tuesday we are now reporting to the new Assistant VP who oversees Physical Facilities, EHS, ADA & Campus Planning.

 

How things work now we will see in the past we have been given enough autonomy to do what we needed to without too much interference, though we did make a great effort to educate and inform senior mgmt. so when issues arose they were not caught off guard.
