Busways, tunnels and rapid transit systems have been the talk of the town for some time now – but how do they work in practice and what will work best for Brisbane?
IPAA Queensland, together with Queensland Transport, Department of Main Roads and Brisbane City Council have just secured Enrique Penalosa, former Mayor of Bogota, Columbia who managed to reinvent transport for the city of 6.5 million in just three years.
Penalosa’s two-hour seminar will explore how the example of Bogotá as a sustainable transport city can be applied to other cities and what it means for public policy in Brisbane on Thursday 7 February, 2008. Tables of eight can be booked for this event for just $720.
While elected Penalosa built and reconstructed hundreds of kilometres of sidewalks; more than 300 kilometres of bicycle paths, pedestrian streets, and greenways and more than 1, 200 parks.
He also created a new bus-based transit system: TransMilenio, reduced rush hour traffic by 40 percent, convinced the City Council to increase the tax on gasoline and planted more than 100, 000 trees in a bid to ease environmental impact.
This is a rare opportunity to hear from someone who’s put theory into practice and developed a thriving transport system – you will walk away with some valuable lessons and practical ideas to inform transport policy and planning here in Brisbane.
