Atfirst tried connecting the phone to a MacBook (Big Sur OS) for the restore, but for some reason the Finder wouldn't recognize the phone. So instead, I connected the phone (while in Recovery Mode) to an iMac running iTunes in El Capitan. This time the computer recognized the phone, downloaded the restore software package, "extracted" the software, started to install it, and then -- got the error message in the title: "The iPhone 'iPhone' could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (10)."
Subsequently, also as noted in the title, when I now simply turn on the iPhone, it now automatically goes into the "Recovery Mode" screen, even if I simply press the power button without doing the up/down volume button trick.
Problem is, the Big Sur MacBook still won't recognize the existence of the phone, and the El Capitan iMac can't update it, and the phone's iOS is apparently messed up due to being only partly installed, so all I can get is the Recovery mode screen, so I can't restore just using the iPhone itself.
Well, I finally got the iPhone restored, but only after multiple attempts, restarts, and aborted software downloads and installations. Even though I was ultimately successful, I still don't know what the problem was. I disabled all security software, was using Apple cables and connectors, had the latest updated version of MacOS running on the computer, etc. etc., but for some reason the connection to the iPhone was balky and inconsistent, the software download kept getting interrupted and stalling, the Finder kept freezing up, the extraction and installing of the iOS kept quitting unexpectedly, and so on. I just kept trying over and over for several hours, and EVENTUALLY it all got completed and the iPhone's iOS was restored. So, thank you, although I'll never really know what the actual problem was.
If you see error 10, your iOS device might have a newer version of iOS than is supported by your computer. You'll need to update the software on your Mac or iTunes on Windows before you can update or restore your iOS device.
Thanks for the reply and the video, but it doesn't solve my problem. As I said, at first my MacBook with Big Sur wouldn't even recognize the existence of the iPhone in the Finder. I finally got past that problem by fiddling around with different cables, so now the Big Sur Finder "sees" the iPhone. But now when I click on the "Restore IPhone" button, literally nothing happens. So I'm still stuck. In fact, the Finder window refers to the iPhone as "iOS device," and can't even tell if it's an iPhone or something else -- the phone's iOS must be completely corrupted by now, due to the earlier incomplete attempt at restoring it. So -- still looking for a solution.
Finder will not be able to identify the type of device until it has be restored. Yes, iOS on the phone is corrupted, but that is irrelevant, because restoring does not require that iOS even exist on the phone. It uses a low level ROM kernel to restore.
Have you tried restoring with 3uTools? It still will not restore but you can see what action it is doing when it fails. In my experience if it fails at 80% it usually means a Baseband problem but could be different with iTunes.
I will try the logic board idea thanks. I've used both a mac and 3utools (and 2 different original cables for 6s) on my laptop and both give error 66. In 3uTools when it gets to 80% it says "Sending Baseband Data". It's on this for about 12 seconds then it goes to "Updating SE Firmware". It's only on this message for a split second and then it goes to "Unknown operation" and then crashes out with the error message about a minute or so later.
You would need to look at the updater log %appdata% and see if the SE firmware update finished. It should go onto the system keys after that. In any event if you have a microscope I would visually check the EEPROMS for physical damage. As I said I have not encountered this error before. I assume the new IOS versions come with new error codes.
So looks like its not completing the "Updating SE Firmware". Think I may be able to get hold of a microscope and check the logic board out. I will then try connecting the screen, logic board, dock and battery.
The phone was in recovery mode, I was trying to do a restore (as new phone) not from a backup or anything. Like I said above, using 3uTools can see the last thing its potentially "doing" before erroring is "Updating SE Firmware". Were you able to resolve the issue when you've had it before?
Hi guys , I have the same issue iphone 6s which occurs error 66 on itunes at 95% . I have reball both Baseband pm and processor But the problem still same . Also i tried changing different nand which is 128gb but no solved . After that i also changed logic eeprom which is near wifi ic but failed. I think they have made some new error 66 which never seen by anybody
I had my iphone 12, 128GB plugged into my Mac as there was not enough space on phone for the update to be installed otherwise. I got this message on the Mac during the install and the iPhone is stuck with an Apple logo and a white bar underneath....looks like about 90% complete. The bar is not moving and its been about 30 minutes.
For the last bullet, I came up with a thought that you could use a spare iPhone to backup or duplicate your iPhone and then transfer the data back over should you have to do a factory reset. The other option was to pay for iCloud storage to backup for a month and restore from there.
This is what I did and what happened to me. I post it here to potentially help someone who are in the same trouble. But, my success may due to I'm lucky, so if you cannot reproduce what I say below, please don't blame me. Also, because I'm a computer science student, I have some knowledge and experiences on dealing with operation systems, and this may be another reason why I can find my way to success by myself. This only worked for me, doesn't mean it will work for everyone. As a result, if you decided to follow what I said below, you need to fully responsible on any data loss and/or any bad results happens to your own device. I WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING HAPPENED TO YOUR PHONE IF YOU DECIDED TO FOLLOW WHAT I'M SAYING BELOW! (Also, my final solution involved a β version of iOS which may not be stable and contains vulnerabilities, please try at your own risk)
I tried to update to iOS 17.4.1 from iOS 15.x at the beginning. Because my device didn't have enough space to download and update, I connected my device to iTunes on my PC and started upgrading to iOS 17.4.1 . At the beginning iTunes told me I need about 1.2 GB on my phone to upgrade, and I deleted some apps on my phone to make 1.4 GB available. The first attempt failed with "unknown error 7" after the verification process after upgrading fireware and software. Then my phone stuck in the "swipe to upgrade" and "enter passcode" (with full keyboard) screen. All my passwords, from my phone's 6-digit password to my Apple ID's password, are NOT working at all.
Then, I manually switched my phone to DFU mode (recovery mode) and clicked "upgrade" on my PC's iTunes again. This time, no error presented, as iTunes told me my phone was successfully upgraded. But the trouble didn't end here. When my phone entered the main screen, I found that all my personal apps are missing, and even some system apps (for example, Call, Messages, Safari and even App Store) are missing. Most of the rest apps which didn't missing cannot use (quit instantly when I touch the icon) except Settings, Tips and Calculator. And my wallpaper becomes pure black. I tried to reset all settings (while keeping personal data) in Settings, but after reboot everything still like that (black wallpaper, missing apps, apps cannot use). I tried go back to DFU manually, upgrade again iOS 17.4.1 with iTunes, and nothing changed. And even worse is that when I connect my phone to PC iTunes, my phone ask me whether to trust the computer, I clicked "trust" but iTunes on PC still tell me does not trust. Seems the connection between iOS and PC are also broken. Now my phone is a half-brick. Can boot, can see the main screen, but no App Store, no Safari, no Phone Call and Messages, apps like Camera can not open, even no connection to iTunes under normal mode (DFU mode can connect)... Another interesting thing is that, when I open the storage settings, I found my phone automatically cleaned up more than 20GB of available space (remember that when I started the upgrade at the very beginning, I only have 1.4GB available on my phone.)
Then, I found that a third party apple device management software on PC offers an official IPSW download of iOS 17.5 β version (which does not directly downloadable in iTunes which seems only offers the latest stable version, not β versions, to users). I downloaded the IPSW for iOS 17.5 β then enter DFU and use iTunes to install this β version of iOS (press Shift while clicking "upgrade" in iTunes will pop up a window to let you manually selete the IPSW file to install). After a normal upgrading progress, my phone showed up a GUI that is similar to what you see when you just by a new iPhone. From "Hello" screen, Wi-Fi settings, set password, set face ID, and some settings related to privacy, then, everything came back!!!! I see my lovely wallpaper covered with the icons of my personal apps again! And it seems that no data lost since all my chat history in my chat app are still there. And my system is now iOS 17.5 β. Presumably a successful recovery without any data loss and didn't rely on any backups!
