The origin of the word "slum" is considered to be an Irish expression, coming from the word "slom e " which means "a desolate or a poor place". A slum is defined by UN-HABITAT, a United Nations agency, as a dilapidated area of a city characterized by poor quality housing and squalor in addition to lack of tenure security (permanent safekeeping).
