I have a Tandberg RDX dock and a few of these vendor locked 2.5" HDDs. They work fine but if my dock dies I will lose access to my data. The theory is these drives have custom firmware, but I believe it's just as simple as a serial number pair for the drives and dock, plus a 256 bit SATA drive password.
Ensure data stays safe, always. The Imation Cryptochip keeps encryption key management on the device. Only after the user logs in with an authorized password will the drive unlock data and applications.
Get protection that never sleeps
Self-defending Imation drives, powered by IronKey, provide active protections against the spread of worms, crimeware and other malicious code. You can even set the policy to self-destruct and the number of break-in attempts is configurable (2-200)
rdxLOCK is a software solution that enables RDX WORM media to be used as a storage device for regulatory compliance archiving (WORM), where data must not be deleted or overwritten, or for ransomware protection (RansomBlock), which secures backups against virus and ransomware attacks and ensures full recovery in case of infected data and blocked computer systems. Initially, users must decide, whichever functionality should be implemented for a specific media. By utilising multiple media, users can mix WORM, RansomBlock and standard RDX media according to their needs.
The RansomBlock functionality sets all data on the RDX WORM media into a read-only mode. In addition, it allows write operations to RDX media for granted applications and processes similar to a personal FireWall. Therefore, backup applications are able to use RDX WORM media like a regular RDX backup target. RansomBlock performs a validation check each time a write operation tries to access the RDX media. In case of a virus or ransomware attack or unauthorised access, RansomBlock will deny this operation and protect the data stored on RDX media from being infected.
After that, users will be prompted to provide a password that includes at least one numeral to lock and unlock the drive. Incorrect password attempts lock users out of the drive. At this point with a password setup, users are essentially done with the only remaining step being dragging-and-dropping any files to the device. Files will be instantly and automatically encrypted. To assure users of security, RDX media features Cryptographic Erase to erase the encryption key rendering data unintelligble.
