Dear SLU Habitat,
Today, SGA is holding the annual elections for a new Executive Board and Senators. We encourage all of you to participate in the election in order to have a say in our student body leadership next year. To vote, see SGA's recent email regarding elections.
Also on the ballot is a referendum to increase the Student Activity Fee. We want to encourage you to spend some time considering this proposed increase as it will have an enormous impact on SLU Habitat and all Chartered Student Organizations (CSO's). If you have not heard about the referendum, you can read about it in last Thursday's edition of The University News. Here are some of the facts:
- The activity fee is currently $45 a semester.
- The proposed increase would raise the fee to $55 a semester.
- The fee has not been raised since 2004, and the number of CSO's has more than doubled in that time (The University News).
- Raising the fee would bring the total amount of available funds from $720,000 to $900,000 (UNews).
- Last year, SGA awarded $820,000 to CSO's. That means a cut of $100,000 would be needed to meet the budget for next year if the increase is not approved (UNews).
As a large organization on campus, SLU Habitat for Humanity depends heavily on the budgeted funds from the Student Activity Fee. This helps to pay for many of our events, our travel to conferences and Spring Break trips, and our education and advocacy efforts. Our Executive Board is in support of the Student Activity Fee increase as it will guarantee that all SLU CSO's will be capable of providing students with opportunities to grow, to learn, to engage, and to serve over the next few years. If the fee is not increased, CSO's will face large cuts in their budgets and will be forced to reduce their presence on campus. As you consider your position on the issue, please keep in mind SLU Habitat and any other student organizations you support.
