A Coven of Heirs — Reclaiming Our Culture, Land, Language & Legacy
October 17–18, 2025

Hosted by the Beaufort County Black Chamber of Commerce

Walk With Us. Remember With Us. Re-root With Us.
Join the BCBCC for an immersive two-day experience honoring the rich legacy of the Gullah Geechee people. This unforgettable convening invites you to walk in ancestral footsteps, touch the land they tilled, hear the stories they passed down — and carry the torch forward.

Over two sacred days, we will travel through time and terrain — from rice fields to praise houses — to explore the inheritance that lives beneath our feet and within our voices.

FRIDAY | The Land Remembers
Begin with a guided tour through historic Mitchellville, the first self-governed town established by formerly enslaved people. From there, we journey to a Gullah-owned rice plantation reborn — a living testament to resilience.

The evening unfolds at Morning Glory Homestead, where Chef BJ Dennis will prepare a soul-rooted communal meal. As twilight settles, we gather around the fire for storytelling, memory-sharing, and dialogues under the open sky.

SATURDAY | The Legacy Speaks
Saturday begins with a keynote address from Amadu Massally, author of The Gullah Geechee Saga: Through African Eyes. His storytelling bridges centuries — inviting us into a journey of cultural reassembly, homecoming, and hope.

This is the first time the full trilogy, The Gullah Geechee Saga: Through African Eyes, Gambozo’s Storytelling, and Diaspora Scavenger, will be available together in one place.

After a catered lunch prepared by My Three Sons of Charleston, guests are invited to explore the bold, expressive works of visual artist Amiri Farris inside the Gullah Art Gallery. We close with an inspiring workshop led by Luana Graves Sellars, founder of Lowcountry Gullah and Mellon GRACE Grant recipient, offering practical steps for preserving what we inherit and becoming stewards of what endures.

This is more than a weekend — it’s a homecoming.
Come walk the land, share unforgettable meals, and be moved by voices who call forth the power of heritage, memory, and possibility.
