*Drive with Me to Kabala, Koinadugu District, Sierra Leone*
Koinadugu District prior to its division that created Falaba District was the largest district representing 1/7th of the land mass of Sierra Leone. Since Independence, much of these twin districts remain inaccessible despite being an agricultural bread basket for both crop and livestock, huge tourism potential, water resources including waterfalls, mineral resources, Forest/wood products, diverse wild life, and potential for huge economic impact.
Poor road networks and the lack of a transformational vision has prevented and often made it impossible to realize much of the twin districts potential. It was Julius Nyerere of Tanzania who once said that “While the Americans and the West are heading to the moon, we in Africa are still trying to get to the village… and if we do get to the village, the vehicle will hardly make it back.”
This is 2025 and we are still struggling to access our villages. Follow me to Kabala, Sierra Leone and not to UNGA in New York. A journey that should be 4.5 hours, took me 7 hours. Pools of water so high, my four year old thought it was a dirty swimming pool. This is our reality for residents of Kabala town and not even the rest of the district, that is largely inaccessible.
