And let me say this plainly: every Gullah Geechee should not only learn Gullah—we must teach it to the chillun. A language survives when it’s spoken at home, not just studied in books.
As America celebrates 250 years, we should remember: our common ancestors didn’t just “witness” the building of this country—they helped build it, paid for it, and survived it. Preserving Gullah is not nostalgia. It’s inheritance.
