Shelby Update: Some folks have wondered why Shelby's not sending out these past few notices. Shelby's on vacation! I think she's enjoying herself in Italy about now.

Crop Swap: Do you have more tomatoes, avocados, or lemons than you can eat? Come to Mala‘ai School Garden on Saturday, October 16 to trade your surplus produce for crops grown by your neighbors. The Crop Swap, coordinated by The Kohala Center and funded by a Ho‘ohui ‘O Waimea grant from the Hawai‘i Community Foundation, is open to everyone in the community. If you don’t have produce to share you can just lend a hand to participate. For information contact Nicole Milne at 987-9210 or nmi...@hawaii.edu.

Fruit Growers Meeting: West Hawaii chapter of Hawaii Tropical Fruit Growers meets October 18. Dr. Diane Ragone, Director of the Breadfruit Institute at the National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kauai will present. Non-members welcome. More info: Brian 895-8753.

The 11th Annual Taste of Hilo is Sunday, October 24, 2010, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm, at the Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin Sangha Hall. More info at www.hawaii.hawaii.ed.

Congratulations to Kanu (kanuhawaii.org) and everyone who participated in the recent Eat Local Challenge. Andrea Dean spearheaded the effort in North Kohala and enlisted over a hundred people to eat all locally raised food for a week. You can follow Andrea as she eats local for 60 days at her blog (www.andreadean.com/blog).

Mahalo nui to all who attended and helped with the All Local Food Potlucks that Slow Food recently hosted in Waimea. They were lots of fun, with friendly people and food that was both lovely to look at and scrumptious.

There's still time to get in on the bargain: Membership in Slow Food USA is discounted to $25/year through October 22. It's a good time to sign up or renew. www.slowfoodusa.org.
