Yesterday was supermarket insert day, so I reviewed the inserts in the
West Hawaii Today quickly to see what was identified as local. Choice
Mart had three items (produce and fruit, I believe), Foodland had two
or three, and Safeway had none, although it identified "local
favorites" which were, I think, all imported. KTA had several plus
the Mountain Apple Brand items (www.ktasuperstores.com/
mountainapplebrand.asp). Next time you are at the checkout at any
supermarket, when the clerk asks "Did you find everything you need?",
say nicely "No, I didn't find any local melons/celery/potatoes/lamb/
chicken/whatever". It can't hurt.
