Hi all- 

Sorry for the long time since an email update.  There are a ton of great things going on in our community these days and a ton of great ways to incorporate supporting our local food system into your holidays.  Slow Food Gainesville and our parnters have been busy working on Grow Gainesville, Buy Local North Central Florida and collecting fruit for holiday baskets.  (find out more on all these below) Beyond these emails (which I promise will come more frequently)  you can get great info by following Slow Food Gainesville and Grow Gainesville on Facebook and linking to our calendar from our website to see all the great happenings around town.

Gainesville Glean  www.gainesvilleglean.org

Gainesville Glean is a team of volunteers (organized through Slow Food UF and Slow Food Gainesville) who aim to put the fruit produced by decorative and residential plants in Gainesville, FL to good use. We're currently preparing to gather citrus for winter-season food drives. Buy Local North Central Florida

The Buy Local North Central Florida program is designed to promote our local economy and support local businesses.Dollars spent at local and independently-owned businesses create a "multiplier effect" in the local economy, meaning that they re-circulate within our community to support small-scale livelihoods and what is unique about North Central Florida.  Buy Local NCF is a partnership of Blue Oven Kitchens and Slow Food Gainesville. 

 

 

Blue Oven Kitchens (BOK) Winter Gift Fair December 10^th 3-7pm

BOK is planning its second annual Winter Gift Fair!  The Fair will be held on Saturday, December 10th from 3pm-7pm in the Sun Center, Downtown Gainesville.

The purpose of the Winter Gift Fair is to encourage the North Central Florida community to keep its holiday gift and goodie dollars circulating among local artisans, farmers, food entrepreneurs, and vendors.  Think outside the big-box giftbox this holiday season and buy locally – buy differently.

Vendor spaces are still available for the Winter Gift Fair.  All vendors MUST be local to North Central Florida (businesses must independent – not a franchise – and locally-owned).  Please download the application below; applications are due by December 1, 2011.  Tabling fees benefit Blue Oven Kitchens.

Have a local and independent business but can’t make the Fair? Participate by allowing Blue Oven Kitchens to sell Winter Gift Fair gift certificates on your business’ behalf.  Each certificate is serial numbered and a letter with information about each gift certificate sold will be sent to your business with a check within a week after the Fair.  Ten percent of the total amount of each gift certificate will become a donation to Blue Oven Kitchens and will be deducted from your check total.

Citizen's Co-op

Just a reminder, we now have our very own member-owned cooperative full service grocery store  that is committed to local and sustainable food sourcing!  It is located at 435 South Main St.   Check it out when your out shopping for those holidays gifts and meals and consider joining and/or making this your regular destination for groceries! 

 

And, as a closing note I wanted to share this -  an expert from the most recent Grist Food newsletter- a very internesting and disturbing expose' onhow our food manufacuturers work to make unhealthy foods more addictive!  - "Do you ever wonder why soft drinks and processed foods have such power over us? Are we just weak? Or are our bodies simply outmaneuvered by the tactics of slick food companies? An interesting 60 Minutes episode entitled "The Flavorists: Tweaking Tastes and Creating Cravings" sheds some light on the subject. If you haven't seen it, you should definitely check it out. (You can watch the full episode on the CBS News website)
