Several local food updates!

1. U-pick season for fruit is here!  See attached U-pick peaches flyer, indicating that picking starts this weekend in Citra. Saturday May 14 from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Sunday 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  The same schedule will follow for the next few weeks with more fruits in the following weeks.  Fruits may not be in great quantity the first week, early visitors will have the best ones.  For availability and more info call 352 595-3724. The address for the farm is

5109 East Hwy 316

Citra Fl. 32113

2. For other U-pick opportunities including blueberries, check out this website: http://www.pickyourown.org/FLnorth.htm

3. We had a great time last weekend out at Cedar Key learning about the sustainable clam industry! Some pictures are posted on Facebook and I'll be writing up a little blurb soon. If you haven't tried this local delicacy yet, you can feel good about supporting a local and economically and environmentally susatainble industry that tastes really good! Read more about it here: http://shellfish.ifas.ufl.edu/. Also, this month's edition of Hogtown HomeGrown features the Cedar Key clam.

4. We will be organizing another food donation drive for a local family in need in the next couple of weeks. The last donation was wonderful and the family was so grateful to receive delicious, local and healthy food. So save a few organic and minimally processed goods as we will be asking for them again soon. Thanks so much to Michael and Marianna from Rosie's Organic Farm and Jordan Brown of the Family Garden Organic Farm (http://www.thefamilygardencsa.com/) for donating heaps of local, fresh, organic produce. And thanks to Stefanie of Hogtown HomeGrown for the great recipes we passed onto the family.

5. Grow Gainesville, the new urban garden network is going strong! Check them out on Facebook and read more here on Florida Organic Growers’ (FOG) website. There is a great  calendar of events here for all things garden-related. If you're interested in gardening, you might consider joining as a member for a nominal fee that grants you access to events and a seasonal selection of seeds, among other things. Great discussions about gardening are happening on Facebook, and help is still needed in some of the committees. Contact Travis Mitchell with FOG tra...@foginfo.org for more information on how to get involved.

6. Finally, we have been keeping our website up to date (http://www.slowfoodgainesville.org/), including a calendar of events that lists all things food related. If you know of any upcoming events that should be on the calendar be sure to let us know through email or Facebook!

Happy spring!
