What an outstanding day! Mike H, please post the pics you took.
I had one water bottle with my sports drink concoction, but that can start leaving my mouth feeling kind of pasty after a couple hours, so I had my second bottle with just water.
Problem was, we burned through so many calories doing battle with the wind, that by the end, the calorie-free-yet-somehow-refreshing-and-delicious plain water was not providing me with any fuel. Pedaling into the teeth of the wind on covered bridge, just a couple miles from home, I slowed down, then slowed some more. I was bonking on a 2 1/2 hour ride? Are you joking? How far the mighty have fallen!! I was relieved to have actually been dropped by Scott and Gloria so I didn't feel that foolish compulsion to push a little harder just to keep up, which I did a lot of today. (Ending avg heart rate was about 145 bpm. Pretty high by my standards.) My stomach was empty, had been making its presence know for a little while and was now screaming for fuel. Finally, across from that new church right near Loop Road, I pulled into the entrance of that little subdivision and rifled through my seat bag. I was pretty sure I had a 'balance bar' kicking around. Yes! Boy did that ever hit the spot.
I resumed the mile or two to Riverwood, calm and relaxed. Bear in mind, what little riding I have been doing in the last 2 months is usually just a loop up Pritchard to Bessette and back down Medlin. About 40 minutes, give or take. Usually When I turn up Pritchard from Covered Bridge, I usually hammer all the way home. (Yes I know, probably not a brilliant way to cool down, but such is life.) When I made that turn up Pritchard, I was shot, my legs felt like rubber. I need to get back on a plan, and not just one time a week.
Thanks for leading Mike. Hope you huys survived OK. I did about 31-32 miles I guess. Glad I didn't have to go much more.
