I am going to do this ride tomorrow morning on my Linear.  That means pretty slow any day, and I have few miles in me, so even slower will be my pace. The idea is for me to be well knackered at the end.  Please join me if you like.  It is a pretty good route for turning back until one gets to Selma.

Caveat: This is the ride Gregg hated when the winds were strong from the SW, but which I like.  There are only a couple stretches that head directly SW and the general sense of it it is SE, then NW.  If you are offended by wind, and particularly crosswinds this might not be so good. I am sure we will have to put our heads down and bear it some of the time.  Bring anti-bonk food and it will be warm so bring enough water bottles.

Be forewarned the first leg has some of the significant "climbs" in the area.  From the Neuse to Glen Laurel on 42, Glen Laurel itself, the climb from the Neuse to Buffalo on Wilson Mils VFD Rd., and the little sharp climbs on Little Creek Church Rd on the return leg.  Otherwise the rout is notably flat.

There are lots of places to get food and that will be on the agenda.  Maybe a sandwich in Selma.  Mike Hite gives a big thumbs up to the chili at the Waffle House at 70B and I-95.  I enjoyed pancakes and eggs there.

Hey Gloria

I may cut it short as well simply because I don't think riding 50 right now is in the cards for me. I'll print out some maps (this time!) and we can chop off a few miles if necessary.

Hi Gloria,

It took longer than that last time (Much longer. I am betting 4PM with Mike and I are stopping for grub), but I think there will be some people circling back before then.  John Rider says he may do that as well as Gregg.  It is a good route for shortening.  The long haulers among us are going for shortening in our victuals.

Shortened cue sheet (this only shows from Smithfield back to Clayton, similar to the route Scott and I did a couple months back.

That cue sheet generator that was on the randonneurs site is second only to magic, in my opinion. Gosh, remember when gmap first came out? And that was amazing then. I'll print a few maps from google of smithfield back to clayton.

Hopefully everyone made it home in good shape. I enjoyed the ride
today. It was windy but not as bad as the wind in my imagination. I
ended up with a comfortable 45 miles. For celebration, I think I will
have to have some Chili for supper! I wonder why I have a craving for
chili??
Cheers!

We lucked out and mostly had side winds, too.  Mike rode about 46, and I had 57 with my ride to and from the house.  I am very tired.

I seem to recall we all have a pact now to ride a 200K in April.  That should be a stretch, for me at least.

Mike sent me pictures.  I will see what I can do to make public the least flattering and will post links ;-)

What an outstanding day! Mike H, please post the pics you took.

I had one water bottle with my sports drink concoction, but that can start leaving my mouth feeling kind of pasty after a couple hours, so I had my second bottle with just water.

Problem was, we burned through so many calories doing battle with the wind, that by the end, the calorie-free-yet-somehow-refreshing-and-delicious plain water was not providing me with any fuel. Pedaling into the teeth of the wind on covered bridge, just a couple miles from home, I slowed down, then slowed some more. I was bonking on a 2 1/2 hour ride? Are you joking? How far the mighty have fallen!! I was relieved to have actually been dropped by Scott and Gloria so I didn't feel that foolish compulsion to push a little harder just to keep up, which I did a lot of today. (Ending avg heart rate was about 145 bpm. Pretty high by my standards.) My stomach was empty, had been making its presence know for a little while and was now screaming for fuel.  Finally, across from that new church right near Loop Road, I pulled into the entrance of that little subdivision and rifled through my seat bag. I was pretty sure I had a 'balance bar' kicking around. Yes! Boy did that ever hit the spot.

I resumed the mile or two to Riverwood, calm and relaxed. Bear in mind, what little riding I have been doing in the last 2 months is usually just a loop up Pritchard to Bessette and back down Medlin. About 40 minutes, give or take. Usually When I turn up Pritchard from Covered Bridge, I usually hammer all the way home. (Yes I know, probably not a brilliant way to cool down, but such is life.) When I made that turn up Pritchard, I was shot, my legs felt like rubber. I need to get back on a plan, and not just one time a week.

Thanks for leading Mike. Hope you huys survived OK. I did about 31-32 miles I guess. Glad I didn't have to go much more.

You and I are on some sort of weird wavelength today. I posted my ride summary/highlight reel at the same moment you did. AND...just got an email that Dean's permanent has been approved.

I am shutting off the computer and looking for a hidden camera.

However, I recall no such pact. :-) I DID say I would do the 90 miles like I did the day we did the one out of North Durham to Caswell county. That was a wonderful ride. Especially since it was a work day.

90 miles would be a stretch for me too based on how I felt after a tough 32 today.

It was hard.  I  have been using the trainer a little and kept remarking to myself that I can never seem to work as hard as when I am on a real ride.

Really, 90 is a lot for me too.  If I could use an upright I would feel more confident, but that is out - only rare shorter rides on upright from now on.

Not a problem Gloria, it was nice to have company. I do feel bad about
Gregg ending up finishing on his own. We thought Gregg had diverted on
Loop Rd. Sorry Gregg!
Everybody enjoy the weekend. I'm heading up to Fredericksburg, VA and
will try to get a ride in near my brother's house.
Cheers!

OK, you two, stop feeling bad about me.... NOW !! I intentionally dropped off the back a) because it's ridiculous to make 2 other people wait for me to eat an energy bar 2 miles from my house. b) it's safer on a road like covered bridge to NOT ride in a pack.

I got home safely, I never felt like anyone did anything wrong and I had a great time. I'd ride with you guys any time, so please stop.
