I would like to ride tomorrow 10:00AM from the Coffee Mill in Clayton.  High of 61 but windy from the SW.  I have a ride that goes SE.   I am interested in about 50 miles (gets me a metric when I include riding to and from home).  My pace is probably 12mph.  I could try the rock thing if we need to go slower.  I will make a map and followup with it.

All is negotiable, but I will be there to ride at 10:00AM.

Howdy SS,

We had nice ride, cool, sunny and windy.  Gregg and Scott Lokken did an abbreviated route, Mike and I got lost and added on an extra 4 miles.  It certainly did work us now and then.  I was really knackered.  Had to nap and watch football until I became sufficiently motivated by boredom - and here I am as old and worn out as the boss telling tales.

It is not a tale that Mike and I managed to average 13.6mph for about 40 miles when we took on ballast at the Waffle House in Smithfield.  We are very good at that.

Right now the extended forecast is for nice weather next Sunday.  I will need to do it all over again.  Might be nice to start somewhere else.  Coffee Mill is closing at noon on Sunday so the appeal falls off if I can't carouse there afterwards.

Maybe the GB at Flowers.  Circling Buckhorn might be good.

I might be in good enough shape for 40 next weekend, you know how I was on the 30 we did.  My Fuji is my main bike these days, and I can ride 2 hours without a rest, so maybe 4 would work?

Had a great shortened ride, directions were very good on our
abbreviated section, thanks Mike.

I got a little confused at one point but I think I spaced out on
recalling what to do at Barber Mill, but we guessed correctly and all
went smoothly.

Poor Scott! I was so whipped by the wind when we left Selma that he
was left to pull my fat @$$ along (I stuck to his wheel like my life
depended on it) as we headed into Smithfield for about 2-3 miles
straight into the teeth of a wind that never dropped below 10 and
gusted to at least 15-20. At one point, a gust blew him into the
middle of the lane leaving me exposed. At that point, the wind punched
my torso so squarely, I thought I was going to slide off the back of
my seat onto the rear wheel.

We stopped in beautiful Historic Smithfield where we had our pick of
closed cafe tables to sit at in the warm sun. Too bad the cafes were
all closed, I would have gladly bought a coffee. I was starving and
chowed on snack bars and fortified my sport drink as I was tearing
through calories. Due to the wind, my heart rate was usually well
above the fat burning zone and that leads to hunger as the carbs burn
up!

Once we turned onto 210 and then Cleveland Road, we no longer had the
wind in our face, instead it was from our left. In the portions where
we had some protection, we would cruise along effortlessly. Joy! Then
we would get beaten up by the wind again, then no wind, then wind,
then no wind, then wind. It wasn't as bad as Selma to Smithfield. I
felt pretty strong.

The miles on 1010 seemed to drag on forever. It stinks when you aren't
quite sure how far the next turn is. It always goes on for what seems
forever. When you are starting to get physically fatiqued, it doesn't
make things any better. Plus I was looking for Lee, which doesn't
connect to Cleveland Road, I knew that Barber Mill just had to be it
and we were right. Once we turned, we finally had the wind behind us,
but it was a little late for celebrations. We were pretty much gone.
Finally hooked up with Lee then Ranch. It was a definitely a day where
adding training intervals at high cadences pays off in spades as the
lower cadence depletes strength more quickly. We were still spinning
along at 90 - 100 rpm up Barber Mill, Ranch and Little Creek.

We had to wait for the light before we crossed 70 for a minute or
three. When the light turned, I started pedaling again and my legs
felt like two sacks of wet cement. I was done!

Quads are smoked today but it's a good feeling.

Did almost exactly 40 miles. Somewhere between 14.5 to 15 avg.

Greetings All,

I had a fun ride. Riding in new areas is always kind of fun, see new
things, get a little lost, find your way home. Mike, Gregg is exactly
right, the impromptu directions worked just fine, thanks.
Turned out to be a nice day, sunny, warmer than normal, and a
refreshing Wind. What can I say about the wind? Uugh! I'd almost
forgotten how much you need to pay attention to side winds, they can
really move you around. I had a number of times where the handlebars
seem to twist one way or the other. The tail wind was appreciated on
the final leg, but I can't say Gregg or I really got to enjoy it. I
was getting pretty fatigued and instead of a euphoric push, the tail
wind felt more like a gentle persuasion. All said and done, I ended up
with around 47.5 miles @ a little over 14mph. Not bad for a day I
wasn't sure I wanted on the bike.
Hopefully the weather will cooperate next weekend and we can wander
the roads again.

Herb,

Slow is not a problem.  Will plan something in the 40 miles range.  I am thinking of Coffee Mill start now, let's save the planing for a little closer to the day.  It was a blessing to be able to plan with the wind direction in mind yesterday.

Scott,

Glad you enjoyed it.  You worked us harder than we might have without you - a good thing.  The wind was good.  I must have really pushed the limits.  Even with the postcyclical nap I was still weary, and I have been absolutely ravenous since the ride.  This morning I came awake thinking about how hungry I was.  That is unusual for me.

Great ride with everyone. Set off from Coffee Mill in Clayton and headed
toward Selma taking the same route Mike and I did last week. Arrive in Selma
with a 15 mph average, last week it was 13.6. Scott was pushing the pace.

Gregg and Scott left us in Selma and headed back. Mike and I continue on to
Pine Level and made a circle to Brogden. Then turning back to Smithfield.
Fighting a head wind since Pine Level.

Stop at Waffle House in Smithfield for a bit to eat, chili and waffle hit
the spot. Average speed drop to 13.6.

Took a turtle ride back to Clayton.

Final stats:

Distance: 56.1 miles
Avg speed: 13.0
Max speed: 38
Ride Time: 4:19:55

Reporting from the dark side....

Mike
