Had a great shortened ride, directions were very good on our
abbreviated section, thanks Mike.
I got a little confused at one point but I think I spaced out on
recalling what to do at Barber Mill, but we guessed correctly and all
went smoothly.
Poor Scott! I was so whipped by the wind when we left Selma that he
was left to pull my fat @$$ along (I stuck to his wheel like my life
depended on it) as we headed into Smithfield for about 2-3 miles
straight into the teeth of a wind that never dropped below 10 and
gusted to at least 15-20. At one point, a gust blew him into the
middle of the lane leaving me exposed. At that point, the wind punched
my torso so squarely, I thought I was going to slide off the back of
my seat onto the rear wheel.
We stopped in beautiful Historic Smithfield where we had our pick of
closed cafe tables to sit at in the warm sun. Too bad the cafes were
all closed, I would have gladly bought a coffee. I was starving and
chowed on snack bars and fortified my sport drink as I was tearing
through calories. Due to the wind, my heart rate was usually well
above the fat burning zone and that leads to hunger as the carbs burn
up!
Once we turned onto 210 and then Cleveland Road, we no longer had the
wind in our face, instead it was from our left. In the portions where
we had some protection, we would cruise along effortlessly. Joy! Then
we would get beaten up by the wind again, then no wind, then wind,
then no wind, then wind. It wasn't as bad as Selma to Smithfield. I
felt pretty strong.
The miles on 1010 seemed to drag on forever. It stinks when you aren't
quite sure how far the next turn is. It always goes on for what seems
forever. When you are starting to get physically fatiqued, it doesn't
make things any better. Plus I was looking for Lee, which doesn't
connect to Cleveland Road, I knew that Barber Mill just had to be it
and we were right. Once we turned, we finally had the wind behind us,
but it was a little late for celebrations. We were pretty much gone.
Finally hooked up with Lee then Ranch. It was a definitely a day where
adding training intervals at high cadences pays off in spades as the
lower cadence depletes strength more quickly. We were still spinning
along at 90 - 100 rpm up Barber Mill, Ranch and Little Creek.
We had to wait for the light before we crossed 70 for a minute or
three. When the light turned, I started pedaling again and my legs
felt like two sacks of wet cement. I was done!
Quads are smoked today but it's a good feeling.
Did almost exactly 40 miles. Somewhere between 14.5 to 15 avg.
