By way of Grinnell Heritage Farm comes this notice of an interesting
looking even at the Des Moines chapter. Andy and Melissa say they are
planning to attend.

Melissa & Andrew,
Here is the info on our Slow Food Party next Sunday, the 11th. And also
a couple of other things we're doing. We have a pretty active group here and
I know you would enjoy the event. I encourage you to invite all of your
Slow Food Grinnell convivium members. Just let me know by Thurs/Fri how many
of you plan to attend. We hope to see you there.

Regards,
Larry

Subject: Slow Food All Iowa Fest - July 11th - and more news!

Greetings to all Slow Food Des Moines members and friends. I hope you are
having a great June (and staying dry) - and a special greeting to all you
Dads! I am writing with plans for our next big event on Sunday July 11th -
and to share some other news.

First - the 9th Annual Slow Food Des Moines All Iowa Food Fest, Pie Making
Contest, Baked Bean Cook-off, Vegetable Dish Medley, and Deviled Egg
Shoot-out is Sunday July 11th (rain or shine - hope for shine) at Sunstead
Farm. The festivities commence at 1:00 and the grounds open at noon. We are
looking forward to a wonderful day featuring traditions - old and new! For
you pie- makers we will repeat our famous contest with several classes:
berry, cream, savory, etc. - so please make a pie!! To add some incentive -
each person entering a pie will get $5 off the admission! For you baked
beaners - the classes include: sweet, traditional and novelty beans. For
2010 we will repeat the popular Vegetable Dish medley - over 20 entries in
2009! The idea is to prepare and share your favorite vegetable dish using
fresh Iowa produce. If we are lucky Johnny Danos will bring his 2008 prize
winning corn dish - macque choux! In 2010 we will officially launch the
Deviled Egg Shoot-out (piloted in 2009) - sure to become a crowd favorite.
If you have a great deviled egg recipe - or an old family favorite - make a
dozen or two and join us. Matt and Pat at Coyote Run have just the eggs you
need to win this class!

For the youngsters - there will be kids classes in all the events, and for
the oldsters we will have classes for professionals, strong amateurs,
novices, and virgins - or close to it. If you would like to volunteer to
help judge or assist with the contests let me know. Many previous winners
will be defending their titles so the competitions will be intense, the pies
and beans delicious, and the vegetables and eggs good for you!!

We will take care of the pig, briskets and other meats - so just bring a
contest entry (or two) and a favorite side dish to share. This event is a
great opportunity to enjoy food and beverages from many Slow Food Des Moines
members - especially if I get around to asking them!! If the food and wine
gods smile on us we will be fortunate to drink some wine from Steve and
Ellen Gaucher of Wine Adventures, coffee from Julie McQuire at Zanzibar, and
beer from Raccoon River Brewing. The ice cream will be from the fine folks
at Pickett Fence and the bread from South Union. Herb and Kathy are bringing
their award winning proscuitto - an Iowa delicacy now famous around the
nation. No doubt there are other local delicacies to enjoy - so let me know
if you have suggestions! Maybe Jamie Constantine will brink his delicious
sangria - and if anyone else wants to join him we might just have a new
competition to add!

The charge for Slow Food members and guests will be $25 per person - to help
cover the costs of the meat, prizes for the contests, etc. If you know you
are coming please RSVP by Tuesday July 6th - by e-mail (preferred) or
calling my cell - 515/490-1577 - so we know how many to expect. If you would
like to volunteer with the set-up, sign-in, contests, parking, clean-up or
any of the many chores let me know. I will be able to handle Slow Food
memberships and renewals that day. We look forward to seeing you on the
11th. Let me know if you have any questions. Please remember - no pets or
firearms allowed. Also - bring your dishes ready to serve as there will be
no cooking in the house - KR (Khanh's Rules)! I hope you have seen the new
2010 Buy Fresh Buy Local directory - Slow Food Des Moines is again a local
sponsor! We will have a full line of BFBL swag for sale. The directions to
our home are at the end of this message.

Second, some great news to share - Larry Cleverley and Beth Jaeger have been
selected as delegates to Slow Food's Terra Madre gathering in Italy in
October. Congratulations!!

Third, at the national level Slow Food is encouraging each convivium to
undertake a volunteer project as part of a national volunteer day September
25th. Larry and I think this idea is a great one for Slow Food Des Moines.
The downtown farmers market is sponsoring a "meals from the market"
initiative to collect excess produce from vendors at the end of each market,
which is then donated to local food pantries. The project is being led by
Tucker Ruppert, a high school junior, as his 2010 Herbert Hoover Uncommon
Student Award - scholarship project. If you are interested in helping,
Tucker needs volunteers each Saturday at mid-day to help collect and deliver
produce. To volunteer please go to:
http://dmfarmersmarket.volunteerlocal.com - and follow the links to the
project, or call Tucker at 515/867-8217. Our plan is to organize a special
day of extra donations for Saturday September 25th and hold an event for
members who have volunteered during the year. Please help out if you can.

Fourth, in local food related news, Outstanding in the Field, is holding
their first Iowa event at Sunstead on Thursday July 29th. We are honored to
be working with Andrew Meek from Sbrocco for the event. You can learn more
about it at
http://outstandinginthefield.com/events/north-american-tour/?dinner_id=39
or give me a call. Thanks and take care - we hope to see you on the 11th -
Neil
