Chapter 16: The Divine And Demoniac Natures
Verse: 9
etam drishtim avashtabhya
nashtatmano 'lpa-buddhayah
prabhavanty ugra-karmanah
kshayaya jagato 'hitah

Translation:
Following such conclusions, the demoniac, who are lost to themselves and who have no intelligence, engage in unbeneficial, horrible works meant to destroy the world.

Explanation:
The basis of demoniac activities is "unbeneficial and horrible works." In continuation with the prior verse, this implies that such men take shelter of whimsical philosophies to justify their respective views. In the Shanti Parva of the Mahabharata, Bhishmadeva gives an example of this. Once a young child unexpectedly passed away. The parents and relatives of the child were so grief stricken, that they kept lamenting at the crematorium, reluctant to do anything. At this time a vulture came by, and quoting scriptures, explained how the body becomes a useless lump of matter when the spirit departs. He advised that the family should depart and return the next day to cremate at an auspicious time. Meanwhile a jackal came and using examples from the Puranas, showed how by the mercy of the Lord, life can be returned to a dead body. He thus recommended that the family stay with the dead body, praying for him to come alive. In reality, both the vulture and the jackal were motivated by hunger. The vulture wanted the family to leave since it could then feast on the body of the dead boy. The jackal wanted them to stay so that he could attack them later and eat them. Though they were both quoting scriptures, their motivation was contaminated, and thus the words and activities were sinful.

In this way, the demons do not surrender to the scriptures. They pick parts that they agree with, rejects parts that restricts their happiness and speculate on every thing for personal motivation. Because they reject the Vedas, they are never able to understand the position of the soul with respect to the body, the position of the Lord and their relationship with the Lord. They live whimsically, fixed in actions of violence, slander and insult. They are inimical to themselves and the world and destroy spiritual truth. Srila Prabhupada says, "Such materialistic inventions are considered to be advancement of human civilization, but the result is that people grow more and more violent and more and more cruel, cruel to animals and cruel to other human beings. They have no idea how to behave toward one another. Animal killing is very prominent amongst demoniac people. Such people are considered the enemies of the world because ultimately they will invent or create something which will bring destruction to all."
