Hi Kerry

Welcome to the group.

Can you tell us a bit more about Astray - is she a Spray? And what is
your history with the boat? Any photos?

Cheers
Geoff

Hi Geoff.
Yup sure can, it is a Roberts Spray 36. Bought her as an unfinnished project (hull only and afew bits and pieces) that someone started about 1986 as far as I can make out.
She is a round bildge steel with timber cabin.
If you  would like to see a few pics of her please go to our site WWW.Astrayspray.com if you do have a look, please leave a comment so that we know that you have visited.
We haven't really had a chance to test her out as yet (still a little afraid of her and her abilities a sea going vessel) but that will alll change soon as we are about make passage for Tasmania.
Don't know why I am so concerned about, after spending 4 years putting her together, shes as strong as all ....
Yeah I know every one says  I have nothing to worry about, but you know how it is with a new boat and a design that you have had little to with, other than Bruces book etc.
Oh by the way she is a double head sail ketch with gaff on both masts.
We are hoping to be up around your way about June next year.
Can you  tell me a little more about the Spray Society Club, do you guys do much?? as there doesn't seem to be a lot on your recent activities on your site, is it worth joining?? As being retired I need to justify all the pennies that slip through, if you know what I  mean.
Thanks for your email, I ook forward to your return msg.
Regards  Kerry

Hi Geoff sorry to take so long to get back to u, we have been out of
range of the network.
You asked for some higgh res photos, thats not a prob but what of? ,
just of the boat or a range of doing type photos as well.
here is a link of a utube flick that a friend took in a measly little
5knott wisper we're doing about 3 knotts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxoMXAZW8OQ
We are still learning to sail her, it is taking a little getting used
to the motion of how she moves with the sea.
We do not have a lot of experiance and I surpose we need to be assured
of her great sea keeping abilities that we have read so much about,
that will come with time I surpose and of corse the gaff rig is a bit
different to what I am used to.
I do find that she is initialy tender, quickly laying over that first
7-10 deg and then seemingly locking in there, I do not really know how
she handles gusts or larger seas. Any comments would be appreciated in
developing our skills with her. Being a realitivly low aspect rig she
should be able to handle most things even though we can still hang
close on 800sq feet of sail on her.
Kind regards Kerry
Looking forward to your reply

Hi Kerry

Our Spray 36 "Spray Dancer" was amazing in light airs - could overtake
other yachts which were almost drifting - on smooth water at least. I
used to own a Spray 40, and she handled strong winds and gusts really
well. Scared me at first when a gust would hit her and she'd lean,
then stop, as you say, but you could hear the rigging really
straining. I wondered if the rig or saiIs would fail before she
actually laid over with mast in the water (not being assisted by
broaching on a breaking crest).
Re the photos - I would love a vertical shot of Astray sailing or at
anchor in some romantic place, etc that I could use for the cover of
THE SPRAY - the Slocum Spray Society's newsletter/journal. (That goes
for any Spray owner - I'd truly appreciate it). Resolution should be
at least 1.5 meg and a vertical shot, please, as it has to blow up to
A4 size.

Thanks for the post - keep us informed of your progress.
PS Loved the Youtube vid

Cheers
