I'm taking myself and my family on a little adventure, slowly moving
up to bigger boats. Started with a little Hartley TS12 and then a TS16
(quite a shaggy dog, with a lot of 'fleas' that one) and now I'm
looking at a Spray 22 Trailer Sailor.
I've been offered a 20 old Spray 22 hull (which has been in storage
place for delayed dreams) and trailer for a great price but unless I
can do a cheap rig for it, it'd prove a bit much for me.
I'm told a full commercial rig would be around $20,000. That's not so
much I suppose for many of you but it's rather a lot for me to spend,
especially when I could buy a 22 or 25 footer on the water at the
price. Plus, if I did have $20, 000 to spend, I'd spend it in the
direction of a wooden boat: I'm a sucker for timber.
What I would need to find out is this.
What is the minimum I need in sail area for a 22 foot Spray. A friend
suggested that perhaps I could pull the rigging off my 16 foot Hartley
and I'm wondering if that's doable and, more to the point, at all
worth doing.
I wouldn't mind if it resulted in less than formidable results, as
long as it wasn't just ridiculous. The main thing I want to do is have
a boat I can take the whole family out on sooner rather than later.
Then, I guess I could keep my eye out for a better mast and sail set
to move up to later. Of course, I'd have to work out what to do about
a keel (as I don't imagine the ballasted keel I have on my Hartley
would necessarily be a good one to move across as well.
So people, any thoughts ..... apart from "what a clown". (What a
clown's ok. I work in comedy, so I'm used to being laughed at: it just
wouldn't be so helpful in this particular instance).
Thanks,
Rik, Sydney

Until then may your winds be compelling, your seas smooth and your
destinations live up to your dreams,
20K for a 22 ft boat is over the top!
In order to work out the size of the mast needed you need to know
displacement
If you can let me know that number I'll calculate the mast size you need
and the standing wire size
I also suggest that you get on the yellow pages and ring all the boat
riggers starting in NSW, and ask them if they have
any second hand masts. then I would ring the yacht clubs and talk to their
slipmaster. they see it all!
From time to time they do appear in Trade a Boat and on the net and other
boat mags.

I heard back from Dennis Robinson this evening and a very pleasant and
informative call it was too.
It put the kybosh on my idea of using the Hartley mast as he told me
that the SPray 22 needs a working sail area of 28.8 sq metres which is
quite a bit more than the Hartley has (according to the information I
picked up after our conversation) but at least I have a figure now.
So, I'll be checking out a few places this week to see about
Secondhand masts and sails and then, who knows.
All the best,
Rik
