Yes Bob,

it would be a ridiculous amount to spend on a 20 year old 22 footer wouldn't it? Even if it didn't need to be sanded and recoated and have a crack fixed.

A few of my mates reckon the whole idea of doing up this boat is ridiculous given that you can get a 2nd hand 22 or 25 foot trailer sailer for $10,000 and under. But it's an appealing boat and I have to look into it a bit. If I can find a good rig cheap, I'd quite like to build this from shell to go.

Hopefully I can do it without the plans four or eight (whichever it is) hundred dollar plans as well, although I was told that the rudder is a bit less straight forward than my Hartley (and so on).

Dennis Robinson told me that

1311 kg is the loaded displacement for a fibreglass hulled 22 foot Spray

and he said that the working sail area is 28.8 sq metres (though I'm not sure how much of that is mainsail and how much is jib.

Thanks for your offer to calculate the mast size and the standing wire size.

I hope to hear from you soon,

Rik

    Hi Rik

20K for a 22 ft boat is over the top!
In order to work out the size of the mast needed you need to know
    displacement
If you can let me know that number I'll calculate the mast size you need
    and the standing wire size
I also suggest that you get on the yellow pages and ring all the boat
riggers starting in NSW, and ask them if they have
any second hand masts. then I would ring the yacht clubs and talk to their
    slipmaster. they see it all!
From time to time they do appear in Trade a Boat and on the net and other
    boat mags.

    Regards

    Hello again Geoff.

I heard back from Dennis Robinson this evening and a very pleasant and
    informative call it was too.

It put the kybosh on my idea of using the Hartley mast as he told me
that the SPray 22 needs a working sail area of 28.8 sq metres which is
quite a bit more than the Hartley has (according to the information I
picked up after our conversation) but at least I have a figure now.

So, I'll be checking out a few places this week to see about
Secondhand masts and sails and then, who knows.

    All the best,

    Rik
