[e2k] Work on server connection

I've done a bit of work on the server connection for the English to Katakana service. At the moment it is producing about sixty errors a day, and it has been annoying for a while. Hopefully it will be smoother running in future and users will see fewer failed conversions.

Some sort of bug which I don't understand crept in and the katakana to English service may have experienced some problems since the upgrade reported yesterday. It now seems to be OK.
