R. K. Roja Selvamani (born Sri Latha Reddy; 17 November 1972), is an Indian politician and former actress.[4] She is currently serving as Minister for Tourism, Culture and Youth Advancement of Andhra Pradesh since 11 April 2022.[5][6]

Roja was born in Tirupati to Nagaraja Reddy and Lalitha Reddy, she has two brothers by the name of Kumaraswamy Reddy and Ramaprasad Reddy. Roja was a leading and established actress in the Indian cinema featuring in multiple Tamil and Telugu films as a leading actress from the 1990s till 2000s and featured in blockbuster films such as Chembaruthi (1992), Sarpayagam (1992), Anna (1994) and Unnidathil Ennai Koduthen (1998) in which she won multiple awards such as the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress and the Nandi Awards for her film performances.

Roja became the Minister for Tourism Culture and Youth Advancement for the Government of Andhra Pradesh in April 2022. Since assumed office she has worked for many tourism destinations in Hyderabad and developed more tourism within the state since assuming the role.

Roja was born as Sri Latha Reddy on 17 November 1972 to Nagaraja Reddy and Lalitha in Tirupati, Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh. She has two brothers, Kumaraswamy Reddy and Ramaprasad Reddy.[7] Later, the family moved to Hyderabad. She got her bachelor's degree in Political Science from Sri Padmavathi Women's University, Tirupati. Roja learnt Kuchipudi and was performing in dance before she entered films.[citation needed]

Roja joined Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1998 and was the president of the Telugu Mahila wing of the Party.[9] In the 2004 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly elections, she contested from the Nagari assembly constituency but did not emerge victorious. In 2009 Indian general election, Roja ran for the Chandragiri Assembly constituency but faced another defeat, this time against Aruna Kumari Galla. In the same year she left TDP and joined the Indian National Congress, which was led by Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy at the time.[10] Following the unfortunate passing of Rajasekhara Reddy, his son, Jagan Mohan Reddy, decided to part ways with the Congress and established the YSR Congress Party.[11] In response to these developments, Roja made the decision to leave the Congress and joined the YSRCP. In 2014 assembly elections, she won as an MLA from Nagari assembly constituency. She contested once again from Nagari in 2019 assembly election and won the seat again. In 2020, she assumed the role of Chairperson of APIIC. Then, in 2022 she was appointed as the Minister for Tourism, Culture and Youth Advancement portfolio.[12]

Despite Roja being an active speaker among women MLAs, she was suspended from attending the legislative assembly for one year.[13][14] The decision was taken by majority in the legislative house, on 18 December 2015, and by the approval of the Speaker.[13][14] Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, leader of the opposition, opposed the suspension. There were several concerns on the procedure followed while suspending Roja. Such doubts made the opposition to move no-trust motion against the speaker.[15] An issue was raised by the opposition party on how the media clipping, property of the house, released and published on social media without the speaker's approval and the speaker also noted their concern and set up an inquiry to probe the issue further and submit a report by next meeting.[16]

Roja was the anchor of a show named Modern Mahalakshmi before getting replaced by Anasuya. This show was telecast on MAA TV.[17] She is one of the judges for the comedy shows Jabardasth and Extra Jabardasth. These shows are telecast on ETV.[18] She hosted one show for Zee Tamizh called lucka kicka, which was a huge hit in Tamil Nadu.[19]

Roja had a penchant for hairdressing and it was evident as whenever she was on the sets she was seen hairdressing her peers like Devayani, Khushbu, Ranjitha and Mumtaz to name a few.[citation needed] According to Ramya Krishna, her friend and co-star, Roja is one of the few artists who can do their makeup themselves.[citation needed]

Despite facing a setback in the 2009 legislative elections in Andhra Pradesh, Roja displayed resilience and made a significant move by joining the YSR Congress Party in August 2009.

In the 2014 general election, Roja's political journey took a positive turn as she was elected as the Member of Parliament representing the Nagari constituency. Her victory underscored her growing popularity and influence in the political landscape. Undeterred by challenges, she contested the 2019 elections from the same Nagari constituency and emerged victorious once again, firmly establishing herself as a prominent political figure in Andhra Pradesh.

Roja's contributions to the film industry have garnered recognition and accolades. In 2018, she was honored with the ZEE Telugu Apsara Awards for Evergreen Heroine, a testament to her enduring appeal and talent.

For her debut film "Sarpayagam" (1991), released in Telugu, she received the prestigious 'Nandi Special Jury Award.' This early recognition highlighted her exceptional acting prowess and set the stage for her illustrious career.

The police opened fire twice in the air to quell a riotous mob when prominent film actress Roja went to Nagari on Wednesday to file her nomination as the Telugu Desam Party candidate for the assembly polls.

Over 2,000 supporters of a rebel TDP leader V Doraswamy Raju blocked the road leading to the Returning Officer's office since morning.

Roja, who came to the town around 11 am, waited at a party leader's place till 2 pm and then went out in a convoy to file her nomination papers.

Enraged TDP activists chased her convoy and attacked her supporters. In the stone-pelting, two vehicles in the convoy were damaged and two of Roja's supporters were injured.

The police opened fire in the air and escorted the actress to the Returning Officer's office where she filed her nomination.

As she came out, fresh trouble broke out and Doraswamy Raju's supporters pelted stones on her and attacked her supporters. The police opened fire in the air once again to disperse the riotous mob. She was escorted out of the town.

Rebel TDP activists, who were angered by the denial of nomination to Doraswamy Raju, a former MLA, had threatened to prevent Roja from filing her nomination. They also burnt an effigy of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

Doraswamy Raju entered the fray as a TDP rebel.

In another major incident, clashes broke out between Congress workers and Telugu Desam activists at Tadpatri in Anantapur district when Congress candidate and member of dissolved Assembly J C Diwakar Reddy took out a procession for filing his nomination.

The town witnessed pitched battles between rival groups for three hours, forcing the police to open fire in the air twice.

Earlier in the day, TDP candidate K Surya Pratap Reddy filed his nomination. Around noon, Congress nominee Diwakar Reddy set out in a procession to the Returning Officer's office. As the convoy passed by the house of Surya Pratap Reddy, there was stone pelting from the rooftops. The Congress activists retaliated.

Pitched battles ensued between hundreds of supporters of the rival groups. Stone pelting soon gave way to hurling of soda bottles and crude (countrymade) bombs between the warring groups.

The Congress candidate's car was set on fire. In the melee, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, a sub-inspector and several policemen were injured in stone-pelting, forcing them to open fire in the air.

Meanwhile, Diwakar Reddy sneaked into the Returning Officer's office and filed his nomination.
