to Sleep as Android
Hi,

I am so restless in bed that I think I will constantly knock the phone out of bed when placing it on the mattress. I'm therefore using sonar as sensor right now, but I find very little information on how it physically works. Some more information on this would help me optimize how to position my phone.

Questions I have on sonar are:

* I now have my phone vertical (90 degrees on its side) on my bed stand, next to my head. The speaker of the phone is pointing towards my head and my shoulder at an angle of about 30 degrees. Is this the best position?
* Would it be better to have the phone flat on its back with the microphone pointing towards me? The speaker would than point to the bedroom ceiling.
* Would it be better to "mount" my phone on the head end of my bed, above my head, with the microphone pointing at an angle towards the length of my body?
* My girlfriend is sleeping in bed besides me. How do her movements impact the measurements of my own sleep, and how can I minimize impact?
* Does Sonar work when the earphones are plugged in? (I would like to leave the earplugs plugged in after listening to a lullaby)
* Breathing rate is only measured very occasionally. How can I optimize to get better breathing measurements?
* Does breathing rate only gets measured when using sonar as sensor?
* Is the snoring rate also used to calculate breathing rate?
* I have ordered a Xiaomi Mi2 band to get better measurements, but after reading the manual I fear I will lose breathing rate functionality. Is that true? (If so: I would like to have the combined functionality as a feature request)

Thanks for your answers, and for developing such a cool app!

Robin

Oh, I forgot to put this one in as well:
* What do the different sensor settings F18-F20 mean? How do I find the best setting to use?

* I now have my phone vertical (90 degrees on its side) on my bed stand, next to my head. The speaker of the phone is pointing towards my head and my shoulder at an angle of about 30 degrees. Is this the best position?

We do not know what the best position is. This depends on characteristics of the mic and speaker, which are different on each phone, and also on their position inside the case. The best position, in an ideal world, would be if the mic and speaker were both positioned directly towards you. This is impossible to achieve on almost any phone.

* Would it be better to have the phone flat on its back with the microphone pointing towards me? The speaker would than point to the bedroom ceiling.

See prev answer.

* Would it be better to "mount" my phone on the head end of my bed, above my head, with the microphone pointing at an angle towards the length of my body?

...

* My girlfriend is sleeping in bed besides me. How do her movements impact the measurements of my own sleep, and how can I minimize impact?

The impact is already minimized by the fact that the phone is closer to you than to her. The sonar at frequencies that we use has a really fast decay with distance so 2 meters away it don't sense a thing.

* Does Sonar work when the earphones are plugged in? (I would like to leave the earplugs plugged in after listening to a lullaby)

No, sorry about that :(

* Breathing rate is only measured very occasionally. How can I optimize to get better breathing measurements?

Again, the sonar sensitivity decays fast with distance, which applies even stronger to the breath measurement. You have to be close to the phone (max 0.4 meter) and ideally not prevent the sonar vision by a very thick blanket.

* Does breathing rate only gets measured when using sonar as sensor?

Yes.

* Is the snoring rate also used to calculate breathing rate?

No.

* I have ordered a Xiaomi Mi2 band to get better measurements, but after reading the manual I fear I will lose breathing rate functionality. Is that true? (If so: I would like to have the combined functionality as a feature request)

That's true, we are currently planning to use wearable and sonar simultaneously.

* What do the different sensor settings F18-F20 mean? How do I find the best setting to use?

It's the working frequency. F18 = 18 kHz.
18-20 means fluctuating frequency.
The best setting has to be found by trial and error...we have no clear standard by which to measure the quality of the sonar measurement in a given smartphone..

Thank you very much.
