Hello, I'm new to this and I got annoyed at what seems to be a very simple feature with a very simple fix. This may sound stupid but I had no idea what purpose comments and tags are supposed to serve. I think other beginners have probably experiened this as well. I think including a more detailed instruction into the app may help greatly; in this case what purpose comments and tags are suppose to serve and how the use them. I had to spend approximately an hour to find this out, and if I'm correct (Please correct me if I'm wrong) the comments and tags are suppose to indicate what "things" I did Just before sleep, sometime before sleeping, or during the day before sleeping; if I'm correct, there is one more problem, which of these three is it? I'm not sure if I missed out on the instructions or whether this detail is truly not mentioned in the app. I also think tags should be applied both before and after sleeping.

Please tell me what purpose these features serve so that I can have a greater understanding of the features and use it to better my sleep.

Another problem I encountered was waking up before the alarm. I have no idea whether there is a feature to apply this to the stats or if I'm suppose to tag or comment on it.  Also it shows as a deficit which I think is not always true depending on the mood after you wake up (Like the number of stars that you put). Regarding the star system I think it might be better to use a different scale (either scoring mood quality or sleep quality) system like: Worst, bad, unsatisfied, neutral, satisfied , good, best.

I suggest this mainly because "2.5 stars" dosen't look "neutral" and explicitly rating this would be easier and more beneficial.

I hope I didn't lay too much criticism and thank you for making this great app, with little adjustment here and there it'll become greater

Please note that we have quite detailed documentation linked from the app directly. We also have a section on tagging, here:

In fact all 3 options are possible. Tags also may serve several purposes - mainly it is for you to track your lifestyle habits, but you can also correlate some of the sleep measures with your tags. And it may be interesting to see e.g. what effect an higher consumption of caffeine during the whole day has on your sleep measures as well as looking at if more memorable dreaming is correlated to your deep sleep % for example.

Please tell me what purpose these features serve so that I can have a greater understanding of the features and use it to better my sleep.

This is quite open and really depends on you. Tags allows you to run your own experiments and see how other factors of you lifestyle influence your sleep. If you like to see the caffeine effect that you may start using the caffeine tag, lets setup a threshold - 3 or more caps - there you go #caffeine. After some time you can see how does average sleep differ from sleep with the caffeine tag.

Another problem I encountered was waking up before the alarm. I have no idea whether there is a feature to apply this to the stats or if I'm suppose to tag or comment on it.

If you think this is relevant to some of your experiments than you are free to invent a new tag for it #beforealarm and you can see what this means for your sleep, but probably I guess it will only lead to a not so surprising discovery that #beforealarm is correlated with shorter sleep.

Also it shows as a deficit which I think is not always true depending on the mood after you wake up (Like the number of stars that you put).

Deficit is simply sleep duration - your ideal sleep income.

Regarding the star system I think it might be better to use a different scale (either scoring mood quality or sleep quality) system like: Worst, bad, unsatisfied, neutral, satisfied , good, best.

We were looking into more linear scale to allow people use their preferred granularity and also make it potentially useful in analysis where too discretized input is a problem.

I suggest this mainly because "2.5 stars" dosen't look "neutral" and explicitly rating this would be easier and more beneficial.

We will consider this.

I hope I didn't lay too much criticism and thank you for making this great app, with little adjustment here and there it'll become greater

We are grateful for any feedback or criticism as this helps us make the app better. I'm sorry for the delayed answer but as I'm constantly behind my emails I usually set emails with more than 5 lines of text for later.

Dear Petr,

foremost, thank you very much for support on this excellent app! Totally addictive and potentially life-changing, if you ask me, given proper use.
I have some questions on creating my own tag icons, as I haven't found an explanation anywhere.
1. Is there a comprehensive guide on the web how to create my own tag icons? Can you please link this in?
2. If not, can you briefly explain how to create these? Or do only you guys have the possibility to create icons to the tags, based on user feedback/preference?
3. Can I maybe "draw" (i.e. by pixelling or similar) my own tags or import them from other programs? How?
4. Will creating these icons mean that these get stored on a central server (and for others to use) or on my smartphone (if stored at all)? Consequently, can I use others' tag icons as well, on top of the pre-defined ones?
5. Is there a list somewhere in the app of the existing tags that have icons? It seems that the number of tags I see free for use seems to be expanding over time: does this mean they keep being added, or is it that they are there but somehow get triggered? I have also seen icons with other users that are not available when I am commenting my sleep, so these must be available somewhere.

Many thanks for your support!
cheers!

Hello,

many thanks for your message.

At the moment there custom icons cannot be created, but there is no limitation on your custom tags. Simply write #my_tag in the commend and next time you will get a button for easy entry, and also all statistics will keep track of this tag and allow you to study it separately?

We are tacking suggestions for icons, but consider them carefully and only include those that apply to a larger publish, help to resolve a common problem etc..

Thank you very much.
