SLB TASK FORCE NOAH

Unusual heavy rains which started late last year continue to affect more families across the Philippine archipelago. According to government reports posted on February 1, 2011, the number of affected families has reached 399,237 (2,001,221 individuals). There are 110 cases of reported casualties with 75 dead, 13 injured and 22 missing due to landslides and flash floods.

Damage to agriculture, infrastructure and private properties have now reached at least PhP2 billion. According to forecasts, such abnormal weather conditions will peak in February,

HARDEST HIT
For the past month of January, SLB has been extending quick relief response to places that were hardest hit by the torrential rains. These places are:

CARAGA Region

A state of calamity has been declared in Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur and Butuan City in Agusan del Norte after landslides and floods swamped farmlands destroyed bridges and roads, and toppled power lines. SLB responded mainly to Agusan del Sur through our partner institutions. Almost all municipalities of the region, especially the lowlying areas experienced overflowing of rivers which resulted to the damage of the newly planted rice fields as rice planting season started last month.

Region VIII

Incessant rains which started in mid December 2010 up until the present has triggered flooding and land slides throughout Samar and Leyte. Heaviest hit are at least 10 municipalities in Northern Samar, 3 in Western Samar, 9 in Eastern Samar and 3 in Southern Leyte. SLB responded mainly to areas within the vicinity of the Diocese of Borongan Samar.
A total of 117 barangays of the nine municipalities most heavily affected by the flooding have obtained damage to agriculture at Php 1,189,500 in crops and more than Php 13 million in rice.

APPEAL FOR SUPPORT

In behalf of the victims, SLB appeals to all its partners and friends for the needed assistance. While the government tries its best to help victims cope with the situation, other private institutions and individuals are now being asked also to look into the growing demands for quick relief.
