Gabay Halalan: Request for your official ballot template
Message from simbahan...@gmail.com:
Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan is a non-partisan and church-based organization of religious men and women, priests, seminarians and lay individuals that is committed to the service of the Filipino Church and the Filipino people. We envision a Filipino nation that celebrates love for country and genuine democracy and we work towards this end in the spirit of a faith that does justice with a preferential option for the poor. Through our programs and projects, we seek to encourage active and vigilant participation of the Filipino citizens in the socio-political and economic affairs of the state.

The Context:

On May 10, 2010, the Philippines will hold its first automated synchronized national and local elections, an event considered as a milestone in our country’s history and democratic exercise. It will be the first time for the Filipino voters to elect both national and local executive and legislative officials using the Automated Election System (AES). The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and civil society organizations have been working hard to ensure a clean, honest, accurate, meaningful and credible elections in May. However, with less than a month left, a lot of challenges remain on several fronts especially with regard to voter education.

In a survey conducted by the Social Weather Station (SWS) last October 22-30, 2009, it was found out that 61% of the respondents have either little knowledge or no knowledge at all regarding the automated election system. Given this, it is therefore obvious that there is a great need for an intensive voter education and information campaign. Disenfranchisement of voters is also prevalent in the Philippines due to the fact that most of the time, voters do not know exactly where their precincts are. The law mandates that the list of registered voters should be posted by the Comelec long before the day of the elections but most of the time, this is not being fulfilled. Moreover, with the implementation of the AES, precincts will be clustered which could mean that more people could be disenfranchised due to changes in precinct information.

Get to know who are running in your own place. You can request for a downloadable copy of your own ballot template which can be used as an early reference. At best, you are even allowed to print out a copy of this which you can bring to your voting precinct on May 10, 2010.
