SLB Salutes the Heroic Acts of Heidi Mendoza and other Whistle-Blowers

(we apologize to those who received this message more than once) 

Any form of corruption in the government is utterly despicable. The poor will continue to suffer as long as there are unscrupulous people in government agencies which remain corrupt and unaccountable for their unjust acts. The alleged corruption in the AFP compromises the interest of National Security and denigrates our democratic aspirations as a people. This further contributes to the already low morale of those who are in the military service. This may even fuel more anger in those who have been clamoring for change in the military.

In the wake of the conspiracies made public by Ms. Heidi Mendoza, Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan strongly condemns the “pabaon” system that has corrupted the chain of command in the Armed Forces of the Philippines.

On one hand, SLB strongly supports the swift and transparent investigations that will allow the nation to see the truth and bring the guilty perpetrators of these heinous acts of plunder to justice. We praise those who stand by what is true and just and risk, not just their own safety, but even their own family's well being in order to expose what is not right and bring to light what is rotten and corrupt. We hope that more and more of our fellow Filipinos will recognize their responsibility and accountability towards a Nation that longs for true reforms and good governance.

On the other hand, SLB calls for sobriety and prudence in the delicate exercise of uncovering the truth. May we strive to be more constructive rather than destructive in our drive to push for structural and moral reform of our system. Avoiding generalizations, let us affirm the many good practices that are already being done in various institutions while we condemn those that compromise our integrity. In times like this, let us seek for guidance from God who alone can bring about true renewal and recovery not only in the government but in every unit of our society which is the family.

Ms. Heidi Mendoza is not just an accidental whistle-blower, she is called to share in the mission of transforming our government into a truly democratic one – a government that serves the common interest of the people. We, too, are called to this mission.

God promises deliverance for us: “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” We, as one Church saving the Nation, urge the public, to trust in God’s unfailing promise by sharing actively in the struggle against corruption and the pursuit of truth and justice.

God promises protection for whistle-blowers: “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” We urge public officials to follow the example of Ms. Heidi Mendoza and other whistle-blowers by promoting justice and truth at all cost. Your integrity shall be the abiding force that will eventually reverse the vicious cycle of corruption in the government defiled by a culture of dishonesty and unaccountability.
