What is the application of backorder vs preorder? I don't see preorder being used anywhere in the codebase other than just a setting.

What is the best method to show a user that an item is backordered? After an order is placed the order item says "new" and not "backordered"

In concept a preorder would be for items that are on an existing Vendor Order, but not received yet.  Where a backorder would be for items that are not yet on a Vendor Order but they can still be purchased.
