slampp on Via C3 mini-itx based motherboards

I am having trouble installing Slampp 1.1 or 2.0 on Via C3 based
motherboards.
While the cds will boot fine, when you startx, you don't get the menu
bar at the bottom.
I have tried this on 2 different C3 based mini-itx boards (one fan
cooled and one fanless).
I have tried the cd on an intel based laptop and it is fine.
If you do the hd install and reboot, it boots fine but again the menu
bar doesn't come up.
Without the menubar you can't do lots of things like shutdown, start a
console window, etc.

I have used both of these boards with linux before and have had no
problems.
