Ubisoft Motion Pictures' CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet has pitched a Ghost Recon film.[1] Director Michael Bay is collaborating on the film.[2] In September of 2013 he hired two writers for the film, Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia.[3]

This review originally appeared as a guest post on 10 Years Ago: Films in Retrospective, a film site in which editor Marcus Gorman and various contributors revisit a movie on the week of its tenth anniversary. This retro review will be a bit more free-form, recappy, and profanity-laden than usual.

The Tom Clancy brand has a long and successful history in both movies and games, and now Ubisoft is looking to merge the two. Ubisoft Motion Pictures today announced a collaboration with Warner Bros. Pictures and director Michael Bay to create a feature film adaptation of the Ghost Recon series of games. The publisher did not say whether Bay would be directing the project himself.

"Having one of Hollywood's boldest feature film directors attached to bringing Ghost Recon to the big screen is a dream come true for us," said Ubisoft Motion Pictures CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet. "And with Warner Bros.' unmatched track record of successfully producing, marketing and distributing big movies from the industry's top talents, we think this project has huge potential."

The film follows the Ghosts as they enter behind enemy lines and are tasked with eliminating one of the most sought-after war criminals. Here's a list of the connections the films has with Future Solider:

Ghost Recon Alpha - the 25-minute long prequel film to the upcoming game Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, - is now freely available, having previously been limited to select channels. Watch the Ghosts strike swiftly to eliminate one of the world's most feared war criminals. The short film is high on production values and looks amazing. You can check it out below.

Ubisoft already has a few movie projects in development, namely Assassin's Creed, starring Michael Fassbender and Splinter Cell, starring Tom Hardy, but won't be the end of the game company's filmic aspirations. Seems that Ghost Recon is next on the docket for a game-to-movie translation.

The Ghost Recon games have never had extraordinarily fleshed-out characters or backstories. This means a film based on the franchise would need only to include a handful of soldiers kitted out with near-future military technology to remain consistent with the series.

In addition to For Honor and South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Ubisoft is looking for a strong start to 2017 by releasing Ghost Recon: Wildlands, the latest entry in its long-running tactical shooter franchise. The open world shooter set in Bolivia sees the elite special forces group known as the Ghosts looking to take down the rising power of the Santa Blanca cartel, utilizing advanced technology and tactics to get the job done. With just a couple months left before release, Ubisoft has started to crank up its marketing efforts, with a new live action short film coming very soon.

Earlier today, Ubisoft announced that a live action film set in the world of Ghost Recon: Wildlands is currently in production. Known as "War Within the Cartel," the film is being produced by the group Legion of Creatives and features executive producer Roberto Orci, who wrote the screenplay for some big films like Star Trek, Transformers, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and many more. To ensure a high degree of realism, the cast and crew also worked with multiple experts including both military and aviation specialists.

A short teaser for the film reveals a prequel story centered around the infamous Santa Blanca drug cartel, the faction that the Ghost squad eventually goes up against in the game. After an attack on their compound, the organization's senior leadership go on the hunt for a traitor to exact revenge on the individual. Rapper and actor Tip "T.I." Harris has also signed on to the role of Marcus, a member of the Santa Blanca cartel.

The 30 minute film is planned to be streamed on the official Ubisoft Twitch channel starting on February 16, 2017. Following the premiere, the film will then become available immediately on demand from Amazon Prime.

Not that fussed about the film and want the game? Well, it may be worth while watching anyways as there is a hidden code in the movie that will allow gamers to access exclusive weapons in the Xbox 360 and PC game.

A while ago the video game company Ubisoft made a big move: it decided to develop its own game properties as films. The idea is that Ubi can come up with better movies based on its own games than external producers could; that's untested as yet, but the early results are impressive. They're still partnering with outside entities to actually get the films made, but the development effort is being spearheaded by Ubi.

And so we have the Michael Fassbender-produced Assassin's Creed film in the works, and a Splinter Cell movie potentially starring Tom Hardy. Both are produced by New Regency, with Fox set to release Assassin's Creed on Memorial Day 2015. Now Michael Bay and his company Platinum Dunes have come on board to develop a film based on the near-future warfare series Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon with Warner Bros. It's Bay's first project with WB, and potentially a movie he will direct.
