I am a mechanical engineer and I use Autocad 2016 for items designing in order to upload them in our laser software and cut them in our laser macine. Some orders include very bad designs with a lot of unwanted layers, double lines, lines of zero distances next to each other (either parallel or with common start and infinitesimal ending differences), open contours to name but a few. Usually, I perfect my designs in our laser software which it appears the unwanted lines as open contours but we are waiting for a new laser software as part of a new laser machine and I am really anxious about the way I am going to correct the unwanted lines in that new software. I already lack time and the production will grow. I consume so much time correcting those designs and there is allways a not perfect result.
1) Is there a way of appearing the open contours in an Autocad drawing? If I use region command in a supposed closed geometry and the command fails is there a way Autocad shows me EXACTLY the open contour that prevents the command from being done without the need of doing that process manually?
2) Overkill command does not combine lines with infinitesimal starting or ending differences... It combines only parallel lines... It does not combine lines extending beyond the disered line too although that extension may be infinitesimal.
P.S: I would expect some solution from Autodesk for the problems mentioned above at least for Autocad Mechanical which is number one drawing software for laser cutting. Give us solutions and save us precious time!
I'm not sure autodesk is ever going to come up with a fix for what sounds like sloppy drafting from whoever is giving you drawings. My only suggestion that I can think of is to turn on "selectioncycling" to make it easier to pick the lines you don't need. You could look in the autodesk app store and see if someone made an add on that works like overkill but with some other options like an option for cleaning up lines that are close to parallel.
However the basic problem still remains! There is a need of a "smarter" working environment. Why is it so difficult to show us the open contours (with another color), e.g. after I commanding it and then selecting the objects I want. Then let me choose which are open contours indeed and not real parts of a design. Some laser softwares are as old as autocad, maybe older and offer that option... Anyway... I will admit it and keeping on...
Thanks again and cheers!
I agree that a feature that would mark the open contours would be very beneficial, so thank you for for submitting feedback on it. It's been my experience that Autodesk customers have great ideas on how to improve the program.
Wenqi Liang has probably solved my problem via e-mail. He respond to my feedback. There is a contour tracing command in construction panel in home tab. However, I could not manage to find that panel in my Autocad home tab but I will manually try tomorrow via the toolbar-->customizations in all files... Thank you for your encouragement to send my feedback. I will come back tomorrow to inform if my problem is 100% solved. It is strange no one knew that Autocad finally offers that possibility.
While I know that there are several Trace Contour commands, I have only used them for tracing and replacing existing contours. I did not know any could be used to identify open contours. So, thank you both for the information.
It works like a charm. So... Autocad includes open contours detection command. Sorry I did not respond later but I am really lacking time... I wish other people will be helped to. I didn't know that your own answer can be accepted as a solution.
