Title: Gluon fragmentation to ^3D_J quarkonia
Authors: Cong-feng Qiao,Feng Yuan,and Kuang-Ta Chao (Peking University)
Comments: 15 pages in LaTex (2 figures in PS-file)
Report-no: PUTP-96-35
\\
We present a calculation of the leading order QCD fragmentation functions for
gluons to split into spin-triplet D-wave quarkonia. We apply them to evaluate
the gluon fragmentation contributions to inclusive ^3D_J quarkonium production
at large transverse momentum processes like the Tevatron and find that the
D-wave quarkonia, especially the charmonium 2^{--} state, could be observed
through color-octet mechanism with present luminosity. Since there are
distinctively large gaps between the contributions of two different (i.e,
color-singlet and color-octet) quarkonium production mechanisms, our results
may stand as a unique test to NRQCD color-octet quarkonium production
mechanism.

Title: D-wave charmonium production in B decays
Authors: Feng Yuan, Cong-Feng Qiao and Kuang-Ta Chao (Peking University)
Report-no: PUTP-96-36
\\
The calculation of D-wave charmonium prodution rates in B meson deacys under
the NRQCD factorization formalism is presented. We find that inclusion of the
color-octet contributions permits us to detect the D-wave charmonium states in
B decays at present experimental facilities. The same amount signals of 2^{--}
D-wave state as that of \psi' could be observed at LEP and CESR. We also
predict the relative production rates for four D-wave states are
$\delta^c:\delta^c_1:\delta^c_2:\delta^c_3=2.5:3:5:7$, where $\delta^c,
\delta^c_1, \delta^c_2, \delta^c_3$ represent respectively the 2^{-+},~ 1^{--},

We study in detail the contribution of heavy composite Majorana neutrinos to
neutrino-less double beta decay. Our analysis confirms the result of a previous
estimate by two of the authors. Excited neutrinos couple to the electroweak
gauge bosons through a magnetic type effective Lagrangian.
The relevant nuclear matrix element is related to matrix elements available
in the literature and current bounds on the half-life of neutrino-less double
beta decay are converted into bounds on the compositeness scale and/or the
heavy neutrino mass. Our bounds are of the same order of magnitude as those
available from accelerator experiments.

The cross section for the diffractive reaction gamma* + p -> c cbar + p with
a real or virtual photon is calculated in the nonperturbative two-gluon
exchange model of Landshoff and Nachtmann. Numerical predictions are given for
cross sections and spectra at typical HERA values of c.m. energy and photon
virtuality. The contribution of charm to the diffractive structure function is
evaluated and found to be rather small in the model, and the ratio between the
production rates for b bbar and c cbar is tiny.

Title: B-L-violating Masses in Softly Broken Supersymmetry
Authors: M. Hirsch, H.V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus and S.G. Kovalenko
Comments: 7 pages, Latex, 1 Postscript figure
\\
We prove a general low-energy theorem establishing a generic relation between
the neutrino Majorana mass and the superpartner sneutrino B-L-violating
"Majorana"-like mass term. The theorem states that, if one of these two
quantities is non-zero the other one is also non-zero and, vice versa, if one
of them vanishes the other vanishes, too. The theorem is a consequence of the
underlying supersymmetry (SUSY) and valid for any realistic gauge model with
weak scale softly broken SUSY.

Title: Reggeon and pion contributions in exclusive diffractive processes at
HERA
Authors: K.Golec-Biernat, J.Kwiecinski and A. Szczurek
Comments: 12 LaTeX pages, 4 eps figures included with epsfig.sty
Report-no: INP 1754/PH
\\
The contributions of subleading $f_2$, $\omega$, $a_2$ and $\rho$ reggeons to
the diffractive structure function $F_2^{D(3)}$ are estimated. In addition we
include the pion exchange which was recently found to be responsible for the
violation of the Gottfried Sum Rule. The reggeon and pion contributions lead to
a violation of the factorization of the diffractive structure function. The
diffractive structure function is separated into the contributions with leading
proton $\Delta^{(p)} F_2^D$ and neutron $\Delta^{(n)} F_2^D$. We predict
pronounced increase of the ratio $\Delta^{(n)} F_2^D / \Delta^{(p)} F_2^D$ as a
function of $x_{\funp}$ in the interval $10^{-2} < x_{\funp} < 10^{-1}$. The
effect is due to the exchange of the isovector $a_2$ and $\rho$ reggeons at
smaller $x_{\funp}$ and the pion exchange at $x_{\funp}>10^{-2}$.

Title: Energy Spectrum of Leptons from $e^+e^- \to W^+W^-$ in the Presence of
Strong W^+_LW^-_L Interaction
Authors: Anja Werthenbach and L.M. Sehgal
Comments: LaTeX, 12 pages including 3 eps figures, uses amssym and epsf

\\
The energy spectrum of leptons, produced by the decay of one or both W's in
the reaction $e^+e^- \to W^+W^-$, is a significant probe of the helicity
structure of this process. We calculate the energy spectrum $d \sigma /d E$ of
a single decay lepton, as well as the two-dimensional energy distribution $d
\sigma/d E_+dE_-$. We then consider a possible strong final state interaction
in the longitudinally polarized state of the W^+W^- system, parametrized by a
\rho -like resonance in the region of 1.8 TeV. We show that such a resonance
produces measurable effects in the lepton spectrum at $\sqrt{s}=500$ GeV. The
results are compared with those obtained from a non-resonant interaction
approximated by a phase factor $e^{i \delta}$ in the l=1 part of the W^+_LW^-_L
amplitude.

Title: Charm Production and Parton Distributions
Authors: H.L. Lai and W.K. Tung (Michigan State Univ.)

\\
Recent accurate data on F_2(x,Q) and on F_2^c(x,Q) from HERA at small-x
require a more precise treatment of charm production in the global QCD analysis
of parton distributions. We improve on existing global analyses by implementing
the leptoproduction formalism of Aivazis et al. which represents a natural
generalization of the conventional zero mass QCD parton framework to include
heavy quark mass effects. We also perform analyses based on the
fixed-flavor-number scheme, which is widely used in the literature, and
demonstrate their uses and limitations. We discuss the implications of the
improved treatment of heavy quark mass effect in practical applications of PQCD
and compare our results with recent related works.

We show that the effective theory of a supersymmetric model can violate SUSY
at the level of dimension six operators and higher. This phenomenon occurs in
gauge theories which involve heavy vector--superfields and different mass
scales. It appears in SUSY GUT theories and is important in models of
propagating Higgs boundstates.

We study the $p$-wave polarization operator of the $\rho$-meson due to $\rho
N$ interactions via the $N^*$ (1720) and $\Delta (1905)$ resonances and compute
the corresponding production rate for $e^+e^-$-pairs at finite temperature and
baryon density. At high baryon density we find a significant shift of the
spectrum to lower invariant masses.
