Ok, there are a couple of issues to consider then:
The kiosk system is based on a central server and a network of kiosks.
The server is located at the SLCG Station Muirhead, by the way. What
makes this setup particularly appealing is that it greatly simplifies
management and distribution. The poster that is displayed on the
kiosks is not stored in the kiosk itself but in the server. If we
wanted to update the poster with a new one all it takes is updating
the poster in the server. The same goes with any object distributed by
the kiosks when people click on it, it is all configured in the
server. Even better, every poster can be associated to one or more
specific objects, so that only the objects associated to the poster
are delivered to the visitor who clicked the kiosk.
If we had hundreds of kiosks all over the SL grid we could update all
of them with a single operation. Sasun's system can be also be
configured so that it displays a different poster on a rotation every
x number of minutes/hours. Our kiosks don't rotate the poster because
at this point we don't need it, but we could.
In order to customize the poster and have a group joiner, Orca must
have added some scripts and applied her own poster on the kiosks. Fine
with me, but this kind of defeats the ease of maintenance for those
kiosks. Also, should we decide to update the poster with a new one, or
have rotating ones, the network script would prevail and Orca's kiosks
would no longer display her poster.
There is another issue: I can send you the kiosk requester but our
kiosks would have to be customized either by you or Orca.
There are 4 solutions to this.
1. You guys use your customized version of the kiosk, but you need to
understand that any configuration change made on the server would
affect your kiosks as well. That is, unless Orca removed the kiosks
scripts.
2. I can check the kiosk manual to see if we can have a special
configuration for a limited number of kiosks, so to have everything
under control of the server. I doubt it but I am going by memory.
3. I could set up a second server to manage your kiosks. I would
prefer to avoid this because it means having to run an extra set of
scripts. Not good for lag.
4. We could let all the groups sponsoring the project have their own
customized posters and have them all on rotation. This means that your
kiosks would not always display your poste,r but in turn your poster
would be displayed in other locations across the whole network. Each
group could also have custom objects associated to the poster. This
has the advantage of promoting both the OSP *and* the sponsoring
groups. It may even be an incentive for people to sponsor the OSP. I
kind of like this option, but we would have all to agree with it.
Comments anyone? What's your opinion?
